  Siding, Highfields Branch Railway, by the embryo butter factory which has during the last few months been forming there at the homestead formerly known as " Bidgood's,"which was acquired in the beginning of the year by a resident of Brisbane, and has since been tentatively worked by his son as a dairy farm, which be has named Wandowalla. This young farmer (Mr. George Buzaoott) is not by any means prejudiced in favour of the good old ways, and to the surprise of his neighbours has had the temerity to introduce one of the Laval Improved Danish Separators, capable, with steam power, of stripping the cream off 90 gallons of milk per hour. At present, however, horse power is employed at Wandowalla, and with this the capacity of the machine is about 60 gallons per hour. Of course on one email holding it was impossible to produce milk to give full employment to this machine, and the proprietor has therefore been trying to induce the neighbouring settlers to sell him their milk, for which he offered a price that would bring them rather more than average butter would produce at farmers' prices in Toowoomba. Up to the last week he has failed to buy a single gallon, however, the settlers having some prejudices against the separator, and the carriage of the milk over the range country being a serious difficulty. While the cool weather lasted, and butter could easily be made and sold, negotiations with the farmers for milk could not be brought to a head; but the warm weather and glutted butter market of the last month has at length induced business. The proprietor of the dairy, to encourage someone to break the ice, offered to provide the first farmer with what may be termed pannier milk cans, each of which when full holds about 10 gallons and weighs nearly l cwt. These being connected with a leather strap are carried as panniers on horseback across the saddle, and a few days' trial proves that they answer the purpose admirably, and will enable milk to be carried safely no matter what the condition of the roads. The offer was first accepted by Mr. Case, who, each morning since, has delivered his milk at Wandowalla dairy, seen the cream removed from it by the separator, and half an hour afterwards taken the separated mils: home for his calves and pigs. He is well pleased with the result, and v strongly recommending his neighbours to fall in, the proprietor of Wandowalla having assured him that if reasonable encouragement is offered he will extend his plant so as to buy up all the spare milk of the neighbourhood at a fair price and pay cash on delivery. He will also supply “pannier cases," charging only a trifling rent to cover wear and tear. I have just heard that a second farmer has applied for a pair of cans in order to send his milk, and that others are favourably considering tho idea. The argument of the proprietor of the separator is that the factory proposal, if carried out, will be an immense boon not only to the Pipe-Clay farmers but also to others between there and Crow's Nest who like to take advantage of the early train to send their milk to Hampton, as they will get cash daily for their cream, get back all their skimmed milk, and escape all risk of loss through butter going bad or not finding a ready market, he is confident that he can manufacture a first class article of strictly uniform quality and colour and send it regularly to a good Brisbane agent tho farmers will, in the long run, get considerably more for the produce of their mulch cattle than they ever have done by making their own butter and cheese. In the hot weather, particularly, the advantage of the separator is undeniable, as the cream is taken off the milk while warm from the cow, and can, if necessary, be converted at once into butter. The separated milk, for household purposes, is as good as the new milk ordinarily sold in towns, and the condition of a pair of Berkshire pigs at Wandowalla, which pigs have had no other food than separated milk for a month past, must satisfy the most sceptical of its nutritious qualities. There can be no doubt that if this factory project can be carried out the benefit to the farmers in the neighbourhood will be inestimable. Taking the average yield of milk per cow at 7 gallons a week after feeding its calf, 600 mulch cows would give 3500 gallons, the cream from which at 3 gallons to the pound, would give a weekly yield of 11661b. of separator butter for the market. And as separator butter is always saleable at the top price it must be evident that the milk income of the farmers of the factory district would be a very important item in their cash receipts."
