Daniel Collins1

  • Daniel Collins was born in 1869 in Highfields.1,2
  • He was the son of Cornelius Collins and Margaret Collins.1
  • Daniel was on of the first settlers in the Djuan area. With his father and brother John, he was contracted to carry out road works on the North Road between Toowoomba and Merritt's Creek for the Highfields Divisional Board. John and Daniel also carried out construction work on the roads from Crow's Nest to Djuan. They built a heavy bridge over Perseverance Creek in 1891.
    He then became a stockman in the Springsure area, droving cattle to New South Wales and Mount Walker.
    In partnership with Ned Bourke of Crow's Nest, he broke in horses at Emu Creek Station including "Whiffler" - a noted horse at the time.
    He boarded the first teacher of the Djuan State School - Mr W. Leane.2
  • At the age of 31 years, Daniel Collins married Margaret Murphy, daughter of Denis Murphy and Mary Hart, in 1900 in Queensland. There were no children.3

She was known to her siblings as "Tottie" when she was younger and later as "Aunty Tottie" by her Collins's nieces and nephews.2,3

Her brother Cornelius Nolan was sent to stay with family or friends after his mother's death.4,5

C por. 226. parish Enoggera.— e) Fee-simple. — (f ) Will dated 30th March 1940.11
  • Elizabeth Ellen Hannah Collins and John Victor David Maddern appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1954 and 1963 living at 30 Barnes Street, Goomeri. John was a grazier and Nell carried out home duties.12
  • In September 1954 a photograph of all of the Maddern children appeared in the local paper in September 1954. The "boys" and "girls" are the children of the late John Maddern, Cornish-born farmer who died in 1933 and who took up land in the Crow's Nest District 74 years ago. In fact Nell was born in 1893 and was 10 years older than Jack, not six. In which case she was 92 when she died.2,3

  • Herbert Collins married Florence Sarah Primmer, daughter of Benjamin Primmer and Sarah Tasker, on 29 April 1908 in New Zealand. The Manawatu Times reported :- "At the Cuba Street Methodist Church yesterday Miss Florence S. Primmer, daughter of Mr B. Primmer was married to Mr Herbert Walter Collins, of Hastings, fourth son of the late Mr Henry E.
    Collins. The bride, who wore a pretty cream embroidered voile, was attended by her sister Miss Maud Primmer, Miss H. Collins, sister of the bridegroom, and Misses Madge and Melba Flynn, nieces of the bride. The bridegroom was attended by Mr Jack Jamieson as best man, and Mr R. Home as groomsman. The bride's travelling dress was a pretty green cloth costume and a green velvet hat. Mr and Mrs Collins will take up their residence in Hastings."1,2,3,4

John Collins1

  • John Collins was born in 1875 in Highfields, Queensland.1,2
  • He was the son of Cornelius Collins and Margaret Collins.1
  • John attended Highfields School, then known as the Koorjarwan State School. After leaving school he joined the Railway. His athelitic abilites saw him winning trophies for running, pole volting and high jump.
    John won his block of land at Djuan in a ballot. With his father and brother Daniel, he was contracted to carry out road works on the North Road between Toowoomba and Merritt's Creek for the Highfields Divisional Board. John and Daniel also carried out construction work on the roads from Crow's Nest to Djuan. They built a heavy bridge over Perseverance Creek in 1891.
    He was community minded and became the secretary of the Queensland Farmers Union (Djuan) and Djuan Primary Producers association. He was also a member of the Djuan State School Committee.2
  • John Collins appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Djuan. He was a farmer as was his brothers Maurice and Daniel.3
  • At the age of 28 years, John Collins married Mary Murphy, daughter of Denis Murphy and Mary Hart, on 8 July 1903 in St Patrick's Cathedral, Toowoomba, Queensland.4,5
  • John Collins appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1930 living at Djuan. John was a farmer as was their son Con. Daugthers Irene and Veronica carried out home duties.6
