Ann Dravers1

F, b. 1837, d. 17 October 1874
  • Ann Dravers was born in 1837.1
  • Ann Dravers married Ernst Genrich circa 1867 in Germany.1
  • Ann Dravers and Ernst Genrich immigrated to Bowen, Queensland, on 12 July 1873. Ernst 40 , and Ann 36, travelled as free passengers on the Hershel with their children Wilhelmine 5 and Gustav 1. They sailed from Hamburg on 29 Mar 1873. On the same ship were Charles Genrich, 27 and Johanna Genrich 26.1
  • Ann Dravers died on 17 October 1874 in Queensland. Ann died on the same day as her three children. She had accidentally dosed herslelf and the three older children with strynchnine. Fortunately three month old Emma was not treated. The Singleton Argus and Upper Hunter Advocate reported "A Mother and three Children Poisoned in Mackay.
The Herald's Brisbane correspondent sends the following brief particulars an appalling occurrence at Mackay:-" An occurrence the other day at Mackay was attended with fearful consequences, and presents features of extraordinary folly on the part of some of the principal actors. It appears that about a year ago a German, who was then living in a hut with three other men, found in the thatch of the roof a small bottle containing some white crystalline substance, which he showed to his mates as a discovery of Epsom salts, and stated his intention of keeping it till he went home, when it would serve for family use. It is marvellous that it never occurred to and of the four men that it might be anything else, although they had no earthly means of telling who had put the stuff in its hiding place; nor does the fact of its having been so planted appear to have raised a suspicion in their minds. The wife also seems to have taken, for granted that the bottle contained Epsom salts, and put it wary for future use. It was fearfully unfortunate that the idea should have occurred to the poor creature to dose herself and her three children all at once—but so it was; and in half-an hour from the administration of the presumed medicine the unfortunate man was alone in the world. Medical aid was at hand, and every effort was made to move life, but the dose, which had been administered with the free hand with which Epsom. Salts are used, had been such as to render remedies powerless before the rapid action of the terrible poison."2,3

    " COOKTOWN, August 4.
When a motor car containing eight persons toppled over into Saltwater Creek, about eight miles from Cooktown, yesterday morning, Mrs. James Gavin, sen., of Toowoomba, was drowned. Her husband was in the last stages of exhaustion when rescued.
A motor car party, comprising Act- ing-Sergeant Gavin and his wife and three children, Mr. and Mrs. Gavin, sen., and the driver, Mr. C. Ure, left the town on Sunday morning, intending to spend the day with friends on the Endeavour River. When approaching the Saltwater Creek, eight miles from Cooktown, the car refused to negotiate an incline. The driver, Mr. C. Ure, backed the car, and then went forward again. It is surmised that the gears then jammed, and one wheel of the car left the crossing, and the vehicle toppled over into the creek in 4ft. of water. Most of the occupants got clear of the car, but Mrs. Gavin, sen., was drowned. Her husband was in the last stages of exhaustion when rescued, but he revived under treatment, although he suffered from shock, as did all the other members of the party.
    THE LATE MRS. GAVIN.

The late Mrs. Gavin, with her husband, had been on a holiday visit to their son, Police-Sergeant Gavin, of the Cooktown station, and had intended to return to their home this week. The deceased was a native of this State, and for over 30 years was a gatekeeper on the Crow's Nest line. She is survived by six sons and two daughters. Five of the sons saw ser- vice in the late war, one being killed in action. The daughters are Mesdames L. Chaffey (Bowen Hills, Brisbane), and S. Coman (North Ipswich), and the sons Mr. John Gavin (engineer attached to the Willowburn Mental Hospital), Constable William Gavin (Mourilyan Police Station), and Messrs. George Gavin (Barcaldine), Joseph Gavin (Railway Department, Chillagoe), Steven Gavin (Mourilyan), and Sergeant D. Gavin (Cooktown)."2
