Their first four daughters Jane Deborah, Ethel, Rosina and Frances were born on the station between 1877 and 1881. Charles then worked at Nive Downs for a time. He proposed going further west to Tambo but Frances could not be persuaded, so they returned to Amby Downs where Matilda was born in 1884.
Sometime between 1884 and 1887 the family went to live with Jane Gillis at Gowrie Little Plain where Daisy was born in 1887. Chales had selected land at Kilbournie and was clearing the land, fencing and building a house for the family. Two more daughters Amelia and Phoebe were born by 1891.3

His brothers Bill and Dick used to walk from Lily Vale to Djuan on Monday mornings, carrying their weekly supply of food on their backs and walk home again at the week end. Their wage was 2/6 a week.
After the scrub was felled and burnt a house and barn was (sic) built. HIs father gave him three cows and two draught horses, He married Wilhelmina Wies of Djuan and when he bought a German Waggon he used to take his wife and In-laws to Church. he also had to drive to Meringandan for their supplies and take butter, eggs and milk to exchange for groceries etc.
In 1911 he sold his property to Frederick Wolski, a neighbour and bought 160 acres at Zahley which is now Kilburnie. This was bought from Mrs Bridgeman who had thirteen children. The house was one large room divided into four with hessian. Later he built a six roomed house which cost 100 pounds. There were 10 children in the family. They had no shed for milking the cows and as soon as each child learned to milk a cow he sat on a block and milked so many each. The separator was fixed on a tree block with two sheets of iron overhead for a roof. In those days admission to dances was 1/6 and a bottle of Wine 1/-.
