  • He was born on 11 November 1832 in Kochendorf, Wurtenburg, Germany.
  • He was the son of Johann Friedrich Christof Albig and Johanna (Rosina) Heiss.
  • His changed his name to Jacob Andrew Heiss. Just why he changed his surname is unclear. Perhaps his father had warned him not to apply with the surname of Albig, since Frederick and Rosina had both falsified their ages in order to qualify for assisted passage to Australia on the "Undine" in 1855.
  • Jakob Andreas Heiss and Johann Martin Bonhag immigrated to Sydney on 17 September 1857. He arrived on the ship "Gottorp" from Bremen in Germany. (The passenger list does not show individuals). Jakob was Martin's uncle, brother of Lorenz Albig who had arrived in Australia in 1855 but had died at Tabulum in 1856 after a fall from a horse.
  • In 1863 Jacob applied for Naturalization. The record shows he was 30 years old, living in Tenterfield and arrived on the "Gottorp."

An accident of a serious nature happened on Saturday morning last to a youth, named John Heiss, son of Mr. Jacob Heiss, contractor, Tenterfield. The day was very windy, and clouds of dust were flying, and the boy was assisting his father at a building, which is in course of erection in Rouse-street, and was going along the scaffolding carrying a batten, when he unfortunately missed his footing, blinded it is thought by the dust, and fell from the scaffold to the ground, striking in his fall some protruding brick work, thus causing a fracture of his right leg a little above the ankle. We are glad however to hear that he is now doing well."

Johanna (Rosina) Heiss1

F, b. 27 January 1794, d. 23 February 1860
  • Johanna (Rosina) Heiss was born on 27 January 1794 in Talheim Heilbronn u Untereisesheim, Wurtenburg, Germany.
  • She was the daughter of Georg Michael Heiss and Rosina Magdalena Kubach or Labachin.
  • At the age of 21 years, 11 months and 27 days, Johanna (Rosina) Heiss married Johann Friedrich Christof Albig, son of Georg Peter Albig and Marie Salome Hessinger, on 23 January 1816 in Wurtenburg, Germany. Registered at the parents of the bride and groom were Georg Michael Heiss (father of bride), Rosina Magdalena Heis (mother of bride) George Peter Albig and Maria Salome Albig father and mother of groom)

According to a researcher in Germany, Rosina and Frederick had 13 children, but only 4 lived to adulthood. Three of these, Lorenz, Adreas Jakob and Magdalena Rosina came to Australia, Lorenz and Magdalena Rosina with their parents in 1855.
  • In August 1854 Frederick, Rosine and their two children Lorenz and Rosine applied to emigrate to Australia. Rosine (younger)'s date of birth was given as 31 Dec 1835. The date of birth of the other three was not recorded. They were all noted as born in Koschendorf District of Neckarsuim.
  • Johanna (Rosina) Heiss and Johann Friedrich Christof Albig immigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on 13 February 1855. Frederick's immigration record showed him as Friedrich Albrih, 45, travelling with Rosina aged 54 presumedly his wife, Rosina 19, and Lawrence 35. They came to Australia on the "Undine". However the Victorian Immigration records show another family, the Albich family had travelled on the "Undine" bound for Melbourne - this family consisted of a W Albich, 49, travelling with Rosine aged 47 presumedly his wife, Rosine 18, and Lorenz 27, presumedly their son.
According to an article published by the Burwood & District Family History Group, shipping arrangements for some emigrants fell through because of the lack of numbers and the passengers had to be re-assigned. A surviving passenger contract for Frederick Albrich and his family shows the family were stranded when no suitable ship could be found for them. This would account for the different information held by the Victorian and NSW immigration authorities.
The cut off age for assisted immigrants was 50. However, hopeful passengers often gave incorrect information in order to qualify for assisted passage. Frederick was most likely amongst their numbers, since his son Lorenz stated his age as 35 and Frederick was only 45 on his application. Frederick was at least 58 when he arrived in Australia, perhaps older.
An article on German immigration "Auswanderer nach Australien" shows a family consisting of Christopher Albig (1790-1863), Roas born Heiss emigrated to Australia in 1854. Both died there. It says their three children Lorenz, Andreas and Rosine travelled with them. There is no record of Andreas in either the NSW or Victorian immigration records, but its believed he came to Australia later under the name of Jacob Andrew Heiss. Although the ages differ, Lorenz and Lawrence are likely the same person.
  • Between 1855 and 1856 Johanna (Rosina) Heiss and Johann Friedrich Christof Albig lived in "Wyangarie" Station, Upper Richmond. Their grandaughter Rose Bailey (nee Werner)'s obituary written in 1952 states that the family were living at "Wyangarie" Station on the Upper Richmond (near Tabulum) before they moved to Tenterfield. Frederick's immigration details show he was assigned to Wellington Cochrane Bundock of Richmond River owner of "Wyangarie" Station.
Although Frederick and Rosina came as assisted passengers, they were by no means poor. According to their application, Frederick Albich had 300 fl, was a farmer, well digger from Bauer und Brunnennacher.
Frederick's son Lorenz died after a fall from a horse at the station in 1856, eighteen months after the famiy arrived in Australia. Perhaps Frederick and his wife and daughter moved to Tenterfield after the accident.
  • Johanna (Rosina) Heiss died on 23 February 1860 in Tenterfield, New South Wales, at age 66. Rosina's death certfiicate shows she was born Wurternburg, Germany and had been in New South Wales for 5 years. Maiden name Heiss, her father was a farmer. The informant was her son in law Louis Werner. Husband's name Frederick Albig. She was 66 years old and died of dropsy.
  • She was buried on 25 February 1860 in Tenterfield Cemetery. She is buried in an unmarked grave in the General Section of the cemeter. There were no Ministers of religion in attendance, and no witnesses listed. Perhaps there wasn't a minister to perform the ceremony.
