  • At the age of 28 years, 5 months and 4 days, Thomas Austin married Ann Honey on 22 June 1823 in Buckland Monachorum, Devonshire, England. According to information published with a photo of William by Picture Queensland, State Library of Queensalnd, Thomas and Ann had three sons, all with the second name of Honey.4,5
  • Thomas Austin and Ann Honey appeared on the census of 7 June 1841 in Buckland Monachorum, Devon. Thomas is shown as a 40 year old agricultural labourer, living with his wife Ann also 40 (both not born in Devon), living with their two sons William 11 and John 7, both born in Devon.6
  • Thomas Austin and Ann Honey appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 in Buckland Monachorum, Tavistock, Devonshire. Thomas is shown as a 50 year old ag labourer born Menheniot Cornwall, living with his wife Ann, also 50 and born Lewannick, Cornwall, and sons William, a 20 year old carpenter and John 16,an ag labourer. Both boys were born in Buckland Monachorum.7
  • Thomas Austin and Ann Honey appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 in "Barnpark Cottage", Buckland Monachorum, Devon. Thomas is shown as a 60 year old agricultural labourer, born Cornwall and living with his wife Ann, also 60 years old and born in Cornwall.8
  • In July 1863,his wife, Ann Honey died in Buckland Monachorum. The parish registers show Ann was 66 years old when she died.4
  • At the age of 69 years, 2 months and 26 days, Thomas Austin married Hannah Chambers, daughter of Thomas Chambers and Elizabeth Chaffe, on 13 April 1864 in Buckland Monachorum, Devon. The marriage record shows Thomas was a widowed labourer, father Thomas Austin, also a labourer. Hannah was a widow, daughter of Thomas Chambers, a chair maker. Witnesses to the marriage were Henry Barrons and Thomas Chambers Tall (the 10 year old nephew of Hannah.)9,10
  • Thomas Austin died in February 1867 in Buckland Monachorum, Devon, at age 72.11,4
  • He was buried on 6 February 1867 in Buckland Monachorum. The parish registers show Thomas was 72 when he died.4,12

    "Thomas Austin's garden upon trust for building a school thereon for the education of the labouring manufacturing and other poor classes, in the parish of Buckland Monachorum.
    To explain and add a little more the Book of Buckland Monachorum chapter 5 Schools in Buckland Monachorum shows."

    ".........A National School was opened in 1859 in a field north of the church next to the established building.
    Boys were taught in the old building and girls were admitted to the new school up the lane close by, which had been built in Thomas Austin's garden the previous year. Thomas Austin lived in one of the cottages opposite the church......."

    Both buildings still stand and the researcher has pictures of the school which is a delightful dolls house type building.4

  • He was the son of Susznne Unknown.2
  • Thomas Austin married Elizabeth Warne on 19 October 1792 in St Germans, Cornwall. Thomas was a husbandman at the time. [Note:- This may not be the correct Thomas and Elizabeth. There were Thomas Austen's baptised in St Germans in 1766 (son of Benjamin & Tabatha) and 1768 (son of Richard and Sarah.)2
  • Thomas Austin was a labourer at Tregyll Down at the time of his daughter Susannah's birth in 1815.3
  • Before 8 August 1823,his wife, Elizabeth Warne died in Menheniot, Cornwall. The records shows she died at 52 years of age and she lived at Tregryll Down.4
  • Thomas Austin died before 17 June 1838 in Quarry, Menheniot. aged 77 years.2

Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin1,2

Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin (1858 - 1939) and Ellen Austin (nee Hooper) (1861-1941). Taken in Crow's Nest.

  • Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin was born on 5 June 1858. on the ship Ascendant while his parents and sister were on their way to Australia from Cornwall, via Plymouth. He was born at 46deg South Latitude, 151 deg East Longitude, as the ship was starting to head north after rounding Tasmania.2,3
  • He was the son of John Honey Austin and Mary Jane Burt Chivell.
  • For the first few years of his life Thomas lived in Brisbane where his father worked for Thomas Payne at "Fairy Farm". Sometime between 1869 and 1872 the family moved to Bunya where Thomas' father had selected land. Thomas was about twelve or thirteen at this time, and most likely spent his time helping his father clear the land and plant crops. After spending a few years at Bunya, the family then moved, in about 1877, to Dugandan (the township of Boonah was later built nearby). Here Thomas, now almost twenty years old, would have helped his father on his property "Honeyvale."
  • At the age of 25 years, 6 months and 20 days, Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin married Ellen Hooper, daughter of John Hooper and Ann Burgess, on 25 December 1883 in Dugandan, Queensland. The marriage took place at the residence of John Thomas Hooper, Ellen's brother.4,5
  • After their marriage, Ellen and Thomas moved to Coochin Coochin station where Thomas had found work. According to Ellen's obituary, Thomas had selected land at Coochin Scrub and the family lived there before moving to Crows Nest.6
  • Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin's and Ellen Hooper's first child Thomas Henry Percy was born 2 November 1884. Unfortunately, he died a few weeks after his first birthday and was most likely buried at Coochin. Their second son George James was born the following February at Coochin Coochin and their daughter Beatrice two years later at Boonah.
  • Thomas and his family moved to the Crow's Nest district some time between 1888 and 1890. Their eldest son George attended school from Nov to December 1893 but then left. George was readmitted to the school in February 1895, while his sister Beatrice and younger brother Edgar (Thomas Edgar who was born at Crow's Nest in 1890) were enrolled in April the following year. The children's religion is recorded as O.D. Perhaps the children were home educated for some time. Three more children were born at Mountain Camp, Henry Leslie (Les) in 1892, Ruby Ann in 1896 and Elsie May, the youngest in 1900.7
  • In 1894 he owned 511 acres at Crow's Nest, and paying rates to the Crow's Nest council.8
  • On 11 March 1899 a notice appeared in The Queenslander advising the Land Court at Toowoomba had accepted applications for Selection from T H A Austin - Lot 26 a at Crow's Nest.9
  • Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin appeared on the Legislative Assembly - Aubigny Electoral Roll in 1900 living at Crow's Nest. His qualification to vote was that he was a freeholder of the area.10
  • In 1901 he was listed in the Queensland Post Office Directory as a teamster living at Crow's Nest.11
  • In 1903 he owned Portions 39 and 41, of freehold land, 89 and 26 acres respectively at Crow's Nest.12
  • He and Ellen Hooper appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Crow's Nest, Queensland. Thomas' occupation was a carrier, most likely supplementing his farming income by hauling goods. Ellen carried out home duties.13,14
  • Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin and Ellen Hooper appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1913 living at Leonta, Crow's Nest, Queensland. His was a farmer. Their daughter Beatrice also lived on the farm as did their son Edgar.15
  • Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin and Ellen Hooper appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1925 and 1930 living at Leonta Villa, Mountain Camp, Crow's Nest. Thomas was a farmer and Ellen carried out home duties. His son Edgar was still registered at Leonta but his wife Margaret gave her address as Crow's Nest.16
  • Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1939 living at Barkers Lane, Crow's Nest. He was listed as a farmer but at 81 would probably have retired.17
  • Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin died on 2 September 1939 in Crow's Nest, Queensland, at age 81.18,19,20
  • He was buried on 5 September 1939 in Crow's Nest Cemetery. The inscription on headstone shows the dates 1857-1939. (His birth year should be 1858.)21
  • An article appeared in the The Courier Mail on 11 September 1939 " CROW'S NEST - The death is announced of Mr. Thomas Henry Ascendant Austin, of Mountain Camp. He was born on the vessel Ascendant, on which his parents came from England. They settled at Coochin, near Boonah. In 1883 he married Miss Ellen Hooper at Boonah, and they came to the Crow's Nest district, where Mr. Austin had lived until the time of his death. He is survived by a widow, two sons — Messrs. G. J. (Virginia) and E. Austin (Mountain Camp)l, and three daughters — Mesdames E. J. Connolly (Rosewood), S. C. Barker (Crow's Nest), and J. Cochrane (Manly.)22"

  • At the age of 33 years, 4 months and 21 days, Una Florence Austin married Hubert Ulrich, son of Joseph Victor Ulrich and Clara Young, on 14 September 1932 in Queensland. They moved to Perth after their marriage.4
  • On 10 September 1966,her husband, Hubert Ulrich died in Apple Cross, Perth, Western Australia, at age 75. Some time after Hubert's death Una moved to Nambour where her brother Vivian Towers Austin and his family lived.5
  • Una Florence Austin died on 7 January 1985 at age 85.6

  • He was the son of Thomas Austin and Ann Honey.
  • At the time of the 7 June 1841 census William Honey Austin was living in the household of Thomas Austin and Ann Honey in Buckland Monachorum, Devon. Thomas is shown as a 40 year old agricultural labourer, living with his wife Ann also 40 (both not born in Devon), living with their two sons William 11 and John 7, both born in Devon.5
  • At the time of the 30 March 1851 census William Honey Austin was living in the household of Thomas Austin and Ann Honey in Buckland Monachorum, Tavistock, Devonshire. Thomas is shown as a 50 year old ag labourer born Menheniot Cornwall, living with his wife Ann, also 50 and born Lewannick, Cornwall, and sons William, a 20 year old carpenter and John 16,an ag labourer.   • In July 1888 The following article appeared in the "Brisbane Courier" on Tuesday 17 July 1888. " To-day, before the police magistrate, James Phister was brought up on suspicion of having stolen a saddle, the pro perty of William Honey Austin, at the Three mile Creek, on the 13th instant. Mounted constable Kiely deposed to having arrested the accused at the hotel on the 11th instant, when the latter denied knowing anything about the saddle in question. The prosecutor, Austin, who is a farmer residing at Tallegalla, stated that between 9 and 10 o'clock on the evening of the 13th he called at the Three-mile Creek Hotel on his way home from Ipswich ; the landlord hung witness's horse up in front of the hotel, and witness remained inside the place for half-an-hour ; on coming out again he found that the saddle had been taken off his .horse; accused was at the hotel when 'witness first went there, but witness did not see him about when the saddle was missed ; accused was sober at first but afterwards appeared to be drunk or feign- ing drunkenness ; witness stopped at the hotel that night, and next morning saw the accused in the bar; accused said, ""Hullo, old man, I heard you have accused me of stealing your saddle;" witness said, "It looks very suspi- cious, as you were the only one who left;" accused endeavoured to persuade witness to have a drink, but the latter refused ; accused pulled out a bank-note and offered it to wit- ness, who said, "I don't want your money, I want my saddle ;" accused told him to go and search his house, but witness said he would get a constable to search accused's premises ; accused then walked towards his home, and Constable Kiely arrived about two hours later ; about a quarter of an hour after accused came back to the hotel ; he had had plenty of time to go home ; when witness missed his saddle he reported the matter to the police. The accused was remanded for a week. Bail was refused, the property not having been recovered."11

  • In 1894 owned land at Ravesbourne, as did his sisters Emma and Harriet, paying rates to the Crow's Nest Shire. The land was later resumed to be included in part of the Ravensbourne National Park. An article in the Sunday Mail on the park included "About 80 acres of the park area was taken up over 40 years ago by a selector named Austin, and changed hands many times, and most of the balance by Brennan about 15 years later. The total area of 224 acres was resumed 11 years ago as a national park."3,4
  • William John Honey Austin witnessed the Note of Gustave Frederick August (Gus) Beutel in February 1894; The Queenslander reported that applications for certificates at Ravensbourne for the following selections were adjourned for inspection:- John M'Laughlan, William Richards, August F.
