  • At the age of 27 years, Christiana Catharine Krieg married Thomas Staines, son of Thomas Staines and Sarah Davis, on 21 July 1845 in Roxberg, Bathurst, New South Wales. Thomas and Catherine were married by Banns with the consent of the Governor by William Lisle in the Church of England, Kelso.
  • Christiana Catharine Krieg was widowed on 27 September 1852 when died when Thomas drowned trying to swim the river to get help for Christiana who was giving birth.
  • On 27 September 1852,her husband, Thomas Staines died in Three Rivers, New South Wales, at age 41. Thomas had gone across the Bell River on business, a storm occurred and the river flooded. Thomas drowned trying to cross it. His daughter was born the same afternoon.
  • At the age of 35 years, Christiana Catharine Krieg married John Oliver Smith on 10 October 1853 in The Three Rivers, New South Wales. John was a bachelor and lived in the parish of Wellington as did Catherine. Witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Marsh of The Three Rivers, John Doyle of The Three Rivers. The minister was William Watson, of the Church of England Church. The marriage was by License.
  • On 11 December 1858 Catherine placed an advertisement in the Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal. It read :
    HIBERNIAN HOTEL.
    CATHERINE SMITH,
    Better known as
    MRS. STAINES
    BEGS to announce to the public generally, and
    to her friends. in particula, that she has
    removed from Piper-street to those commodious
    premises, known as the Hibernian Hotel, Stewart

    supply them with good cheer of every description.

At her residence, the Hibernian Hotel, Stewart-street, Mrs. Catherine Smith, known as Mrs. Staines, in the 41st year of her age, leaving five young children to deplore their loss. Her funeral will take place this day at 3 o'clock."
  • She was buried on 14 December 1859 in Bathurst Cemetery. The local paper reported- "Death. At her residence, the Hibernian Hotel, Stewart-street, Mrs. Catherine Smith, known as Mrs. Staines, in the 41st year of her age, leaving five young children to deplore their loss. Her funeral will take place this day at 3 o'clock."
