  • Mary Batten was baptized on 9 March 1849 in Paul, Cornwall. She was the daughter of Grace Williams and John Batten, a joiner of Newlyn.
  • At the age of 22 years, 4 months and 7 days, Mary Batten married Benjamin Barnes, son of Benjamin Barnes and Nancy Tonkin, on 16 July 1871 in St Peter's Chruch, Newlyn. Benjamin was a gardener of Tolcarne, son of Benjamin Barnes gardener. Mary was the 18 year old daughter of John Batten a carpenter of Coombe Lane, Newlyn.
  • Mary Batten and Benjamin Barnes immigrated to Victoria in 1883. Ben and Mary travelled with their three children Matilda, Harold and Elizabeth. They lived for some time at Port Arlington in Victoria, then Benny ran a dairy at Dalesford. They also ran a boarding house. They wroked a small crop farm and sold produce locally. Ben and Mary moved back to Victoria around 1927.
