At the time he enlisted Albert was a farmer. He was appointed driver and served in Egypt and France in the Medical Corps.

Hunt, Long-street, Toowoomba, and Mr. A. Askin, youngest son of the late Mr. R. Askin and Mrs. Askin, Crow's Nest, the Rev. A. Atherton being the officiating clergyman. The bride looked very dainty and sweet in a frock of ivory crepe de chine with bodice and side panels of beautiful lace. The embroidered veil worn cap wise was held in place with tiny handmade pink roses and pale pink satin slippers, and hose were worn; and she carried a sheaf of arum lilies. Miss Dorothy Kelly the bride's niece, wore a frock of pale pink crepe de chine, finely braided and a broad leafed hat of pink tulle with 'sash' ends of tulle. Mr. Bert Barnes, nephew of the bridegroom acted as best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at the Central Tea Rooms, where freesias formed the decorations, and later Mr. and Mrs. Askin motored to Toowoomba en route to Rockhampton, the bride travelling in a frock of fawn wool gabardine touched with satin and a small harmonising hat of chin straw". They settled in Nanango.

Askin and the late Mr. R. Askin, of Crow's Nest) was married to Mr. Andrew Leslie M'Phail (youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John M'Phail, of Pierce Creek). The Rev. H. Garrett (Crow's Nest) officiated. The bride who was given away by her brother-in-law, Mr. T. Adams, wore her travelling frock, which was composed of sand crepe Marocain, straight-lined, beautifully beaded frock, with which a close fitting navy blue hat was worn. Miss May Askin (sister of the bride) attended as bridesmaid, and wore a frock of lemon fugi silk, trimmed with pin tucks and stitchery. A small black, satin cloche was also worn. Mr. Albert Barnes was best man. The honeymoon is being spent in Brisbane and at the seaside"
  At the time of their marriage Daisy lived in Crow's Nest and worked in the library. After their marriage Les and Daisy moved to River Trees in New South Wales and eventually settled in Wilson's Downfall. He signed his portion of the Pierce Creek farm over to his sister Jessie in 1937.

• Benjamin Barnes and Mary Batten immigrated to Victoria in 1883. Ben and Mary travelled with their three children Matilda, Harold and Elizabeth. They lived for some time at Port Arlington in Victoria, then Benny ran a dairy at Dalesford. They also ran a boarding house. Around 1909 Benny, Mary and Elizabeth moved to Queensland and settled at Ravensbourne on land opposite the Ravensbourne Park & Recreational Area. They wroked a small crop farm and sold produce locally. Ben and Mary moved back to Victoria around 1927.

• Charles Barnes was born on 1 September 1839 in Tredavoe, Penzance, Cornwall.
• He was the son of Benjamin Prowse Barnes and Jane Badcock.
• Charles Barnes was baptized on 15 September 1839 in Paul, Cornwall, England.
• At the age of 22 years and 4 months, Charles Barnes married Mary Ann Maddern, daughter of Thomas Maddern and Priscilla Lower, on 1 January 1862 in Paul, Newlyn, Cornwall, England. The marriage record shows they were married by banns. Charles Varbes (incorrect spelling), 22 was a gardener of Stable Hobba (Father: Benjamin Barnes, Gardener). Mary Ann Maddern 22 was of Newlyn (Father: Thomas Maddern, Agent). Witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Maddern, Catherine Maddern.
  
• Charles Barnes and Mary Ann Maddern immigrated to Moreton Bay, Queensland, on 7 April 1862. The ship "Mortmorrency" had departed Plymouth, Devon on 4th January 1862.
  
• Robin Smith wrote about the Barnes brothers in his book Crows Nest History.
  "Among the first settlers in Crow's Nest were the brothers, Charles and John Barnes. Charlie was born in Cornwall, England 1839. In 1862 he married Mary Ann Maddern and the same day took her aboard the "Mortmeronsa", bound for Queensland. His first job was at Coomrith Station on the Mooney. 1863 was a year of drought and in 1864 he resolved to move to Toowoomba. After setting out with a dray and two horses the drought broke and it rained every day of the journey and one night he awakened to find water surging around the bunk. His next work was on the railway between Ipswich and Toowoomba. He was employed on the Liverpool tunnel and was in Ballard's camp at the time of the big strike. In 1866 he took up thirty acres of land at Gowrie Creek, near the present asylum, where he carried on dairying until 1879?. In 1875, together with his brother land was selected at Crow's Nest and he and his family shifted to Penzance where he lived until he retired.
  
  Just after settling on his selection he was startled one morning while ploughing, to see a woman emerge from the bush wild eyed and muttering: "Oh my children, my children" It was Mrs Egan. It transpired that she had gone for the cows, leaving her three children at their bush home. The poor soul had been wondering for three days. Her boots had been discarded to ease her feet and strips of her dress had been torn off and bound round her feet when they had become torn and bleeding. It was the barking of Barnes' dog which saved her life. Charles Barnes died in Crow's Nest on 31 October 1925.
  
  John Barnes was born in 1843 and about 1863 he left Cornwall to join Charles at Coomrith and arrived there in time to accompany him on his journey to Toowoomba. John then followed mining at Bendigo, Stanthorpe, and Palmer River. Whilst operating a mine at the latter place his two mates died and he contracted ague. He left the field and walked to Cooktown. He started with a new pair of boots, but they were worn out before he reached Cooktown. Fear of blacks kept him from lighting a fire throughout the journey, so he subsisted on flour mixed with water. From Cooktown he caught a boat to Brisbane in 1875 and re-joined his brother at Gowrie Creek. It was then they in partnership, selected Penzance; and when, in the early 80's John took up a selection at Emu Creek, they dissolved the partnership, Charles keeping Penzance and John taking the cattle. The property, eventually 1280 acres was named "Hinton."
  
• In March 1877, Charles Barnes enrolled his son Charles John Barnes in the Crow's Nest Provisional School. Charles jnr was 12 years old. His siblings Jane 10, Joseph 8, William 6 and Emily 4 also started at the new school. The teacher was William Jenkinson who was untrained and had to cope with an under-equipped school. There were no blackboards, slates, books etc. He left a few months later and was replaced by David Moylan.
  
• On 2 October 1882,his wife, Mary Ann Maddern died in Rosella Farm, Gowrie Creek, Queensland, at age 42. Mary Ann died from typhoid fever just three and a half weeks after her nineth child Ida May was born.
  
• Charles Barnes attested that John Maddern and Mary Ann Cossart had lived on, and improved their selection Kedron Brook before gaining the Deed of Grant on 18 August 1884; John and Mary Ann Maddern obtained the Deed of Grant to Kedron Brook. In the five years he had worked on the land he had added a home worth £40.00.00; 1/2 acres of garden valued at £20.00.00; 1/4 mile of paling fences to the value of £20.00.00 and two miles of rail fence valued at £80.00.00 - a total of £160.00.00. Charles Barnes and F A Michell attested to John's residency, and the improvements he had made over the five years.
  
• In 1886 Charles Barnes was paying rates to the Crow's Nest Shire Council for Portion 1289, and area of 788 acres.
• He appeared on the Legislative Assembly - Aubigny Electoral Roll in 1900 living at Penzance Vale, Crow's Nest. His qualification to vote was that he was a freeholder of the area.

• On 6 November 1925 Charles Barnes's obituary appeared in Charles's obituary appeared in The Courier Mail. It read:- "The death is announced of another of the pioneers of Crow's Nest, Mr. Charles Barnes, who passed away at Anduramba on October 31, at the age of 86 years. Deceased was born at Tredavoe, Cornwall, England, on August 31, 1839, and was married to Miss Mary Ann Maddern on January 1, 1862. The young couple sailed from England on the day following their marriage in the sailing ship The Mount Merenza, and landed in Brisbane on May 3, 1862. After spending two days in Brisbane, they proceeded to Coomrith station, the journey, which was accomplished in a horse dray, taking three weeks. Deceased spent about 12 months on this station, which was principally a sheep station, and then decided to leave the station. They had a very hard journey, as rain commenced to fall on January 3, and continued intermittently for seven weeks. The Mooney and Condamine rivers were in flood, and it took the late Mr. and Mrs. Barnes nearly seven weeks to reach Toowoomba. Deceased secured work in the Liverpool tunnel during the construction of the railway line between Ipswich and Toowoomba. In 1866 he took up land at Gowrie Creek, near Toowoomba, where he carried on farming and fruit growing until 1879, when he removed to Crow's Nest, and took up land on which he carried on dairying and cattle raising practically to the time of his death. The late Mr. Barnes's wife predeceased him 43 years ago. Deceased leaves seven children, 51 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. The sons and daughters are Charles, Joseph, and William (Anduramba), and Walter (Yarraman); Mrs. F. Greenslade (Kingaroy); Mrs. W. Auld (Nundah), and Mrs C. Deeth (Pechey).". • The Methodist Church in Crow's Nest erected memorial plaques to early Crow's Nest Pioneers on the Church fence. Charles & Mary Ann's names were amongst them, as was their daughter Jane's.
