Cornelius O'Connor1

M, b. 1841, d. 5 August 1922

Cornelius O'Connor (1841-1922) & his wife Mary Wilson (1865-1936). Pioneers of the Emu Creek District
  • Cornelius O'Connor was born in 1841 in Meelin, Newmarket, County York, Ireland. He was the son of Timothy O'Connor and Ellen O'Connor.1,2,3
  • He and Patrick Lenehan, his cousin, immigrated to Queensland in 1864. He would have been 23 years old. Con and Patrick were cousins and travelled on the ship Queen of the South.
They worked in the Ipswich area until 1875 when Con found work on Emu Creek Station as a stockman and fencer. Patrick remained at Rosewood.
When work was scarce at Emu Creek Station Con would join the shearing circuit, sometimes walking between properties when the feed was scarce for the horse. On his visits to Jondaryan Homestead Station he would always bring a packet of lollies for little Jimmy Fenton who still remembered this kindness when he was well into his ninties.4,5
  • Cornelius O'Connor selected land on 21 February 1881 in Emu Creek. The land adjoined Emu Creek Station Homestead. He built a slab hut with a dirt floor and shingle roof.5
  • At the age of 46 years, Cornelius O'Connor married Mary Wilson on 9 February 1887 in St Patrick's Catholic Church, Toowoomba, Queensland. They lived in Con's slab hut. Two children, Mary and John, were born at Emu Creek before Con and Mary moved to "Mountain Camp", a property a few miles up Emu Creek. In May 1891, Peter McKilllop, the owner of Emu Creek Station exchanged his block, now known as "Mountain Camp", for the O'Connors block at Emu Creek. A hand written agreement was drawn up by Flower and Hart, solicitors, Brisbane. The document included legal details for the removal of the slab house to "Mountain Camp" in 1892. The land a Emu Creek was eventually settled by Orlando, then Egbert Maddern.
The O'Connor family lived in a slab barn while their house was being removed and re-erected. Both the house and the barn, built with morticed joints and wooden dowels were still standing in 1991. The shingle roofs had been replaced by corrigated iron.6,7,3
  • The family carried out dairying and cheese making. In the middle of the 1890's a travelling dairy came to the district to teach the art of cheese making. Mary attended soon was selling cheese to locals and also sent some to Brisbane. The children often carried a heavy cheeses with them on the walk to Djuan school, about four miles away. Mary was awarded First Prize for the Best Farmers Cheese at the Crow's Nest Show in 1904. The family continued to be competitors and exhibitors at the show for many years.5,7
  • Cornelius O'Connor and Mary Wilson had four more children ., Ellen, Cornelius, Bridget and Catherine, all born at "Mountain Camp". The family lived in the slab hut until a home was built in 1907.5
  • Cornelius O'Connor and Mary Wilson appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Djuan. Con was a farmer.8
