George Parton1

  • George Parton was born on 10 September 1861 in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England.1,2,3
  • He was the son of Thomas Parton and Margaret Moore.1
  • George Parton immigrated on 30 October 1878 to Moreton Bay with Susan Harris and Thomas Parton. The family travelled on the Scottish Admiral. The records show Thomas was 24 years old, Susan 22 Their children Thomas and Elizabeth A were 2 and an infant. Elizabeth died on the voyage.
    Thomas' brother George also travelled with them. Thomas' parents Thomas and Margaret followed on the Manora in 1882.4
  • George held many different jobs including a trek to Winton with a bulloock team. He also carted wool for the Jondaryan Woolshed and timber for Mt Binga Mill.
    When part of Emu Creek Station was opened up for selection, George was one of the fifteen selectors to secure a parcel of land. As with the other selectors of the area, George often supplimented his income by working at Emu Creek Station.5
  • George Parton was a creditor of the insolvent estate of Cameron and Hebbel. A meeting of creditors in the insolvent estate of John Cameron and John Heinrich Hebbel trading as timber merchants of Toowoomba took place in Toowoomba. Amongst the creditors were Thomas Cullen £10 3s 4d, Thomas Brennan £39; H A Shum £34; Claud Cronk 44; George Parton £22.6

  • At the age of 38 years, 10 months and 1 day, George Parton married Amelia Graving, daughter of Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Grawich and Wilhemina Beier, on 11 July 1900 in Emu Creek. Amelia was living at Middle Ridge when she was married. George and Amelia lived in Crows Nest for 11 years after their marriage before moving to Glenaven where they took part in mixed farming, dairying and cattle grazing. George also had a bullock team.7,8
  • George Parton and Amelia Graving appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Djuan. George was a farmer and Amelia carried out home duties.9
  • George Parton witnessed the burial of Cornelius O'Connor on 6 August 1922 in Emu Creek Cemetery.10,11
  • George Parton died on 24 January 1927 in Queensland at age 65. After George's death the farm was run by family members.1,12
  • He was buried in Emu Creek Cemetery.13
  • The Methodist Church in Crow's Nest erected memorial plaques to early Crow's Nest Pioneers on the Church fence. George and Amelia's names were amongst them.14

  • George Parton witnessed the marriage of Lillian Mildred Parton and Jacob Albert Gscheidle on 20 April 1927 in the Methodist Church, Crow's Nest, Queensland; A report of the wedding appeared in "The Courier Mail" on 29 April 1927. It read:- " GSCHEIDLE-PARTON.
    A picturesque wedding took place on April 20 at the Methodist Church, Crow's Nest, when Mr. Jacob Albert Gscheidle (son of Mr. and Mrs. Gscheidle,(Kulpi) was married to Miss Lillian Mildred Parton (third daughter of the late Councillor and Mrs. Parton). The Rev. H. J. Garrett officiated. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr. George Parton, wore a beautiful gown of cream Marocain with the bodice finely tucked and beaded in opal, and palest pink, caught at left shoulder, with a spray of silver and pink beads. The skirt of French pleating was finished at the waist with a folded belt and opal buckle. Her veil was of the finest net embroidered in silk, and worn in cap effect with sprays of orange blossoms. She carried a bouquet of white cherries, and pink roses, finished with pink tulle, and streamers. Her sister, Miss Lizzie Parton, acted as bridesmaid, wearing a gown of pale mauve crepe de Chine, with a finely shirred skirt, the bodice being inlet with French pleating, finished with headings in the same tone of mauve and silver, with sprays at shoulder, and waist. Her cap was of silver satin, and she carried a bouquet of pink roses tied with tulle and streamers. Mr. C. Bidgood (Emu Creek) acted as best man. A wedding breakfast waa held at Preston's Cafe. The bride's gift to the bride groom was a wristlet watch, and the bridegroom's gift to the bride a fur stole The bridegroom's gift to the bridesmaid was a xylonite brush and comb. The mother of the bride was gowned in black satin, beaded in jet, with a hat to match The mother of the bridegroom was gowned in navy crepe de Chine, with a hat to match. The honeynoon is being spent at Tambourine Mountains and Brisbane. The bride wore a travelling dress of deep beige, embroidered in mulberry shades"
    The couple lived at "Nutgrove."3,4
  • At the age of 25 years, 8 months and 17 days, George Parton married Lucy Joyce Pettinger, daughter of Ellen Pettinger, on 28 November 1928 in Queensland. They eventually moved to Kumbia and had 9 children.5,6

A report of the wedding appeared in "The Courier Mail" on 29 April 1927. It read:- " GSCHEIDLE-PARTON.
    A picturesque wedding took place on April 20 at the Methodist Church, Crow's Nest, when Mr. Jacob Albert Gscheidle (son of Mr. and Mrs. Gscheidle,(Kulpi) was married to Miss Lillian Mildred Parton (third daughter of the late Councillor and Mrs. Parton). The Rev. H. J. Garrett officiated. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr. George Parton, wore a beautiful gown of cream Marocain with the bodice finely tucked and beaded in opal, and palest pink, caught at left shoulder, with a spray of silver and pink beads. The skirt of French pleating was finished at the waist with a folded belt and opal buckle. Her veil was of the finest net embroidered in silk, and worn in cap effect with sprays of orange blossoms. She carried a bouquet of white cherries, and pink roses, finished with pink tulle, and streamers. Her sister, Miss Lizzie Parton, acted as bridesmaid, wearing a gown of pale mauve crepe de Chine, with a finely shirred skirt, the bodice being inlet with French pleating, finished with headings in the same tone of mauve and silver, with sprays at shoulder, and waist. Her cap was of silver satin, and she carried a bouquet of pink roses tied with tulle and streamers. Mr. C. Bidgood (Emu Creek) acted as best man. A wedding breakfast waa held at Preston's Cafe. The bride's gift to the bride groom was a wristlet watch, and the bridegroom's gift to the bride a fur stole The bridegroom's gift to the bridesmaid was a xylonite brush and comb. The mother of the bride was gowned in black satin, beaded in jet, with a hat to match The mother of the bridegroom was gowned in navy crepe de Chine, with a hat to match. The honeynoon is being spent at Tambourine Mountains and Brisbane. The bride wore a travelling dress of deep beige, embroidered in mulberry shades"

  • Richard Parton enlisted in the AIF on 15 August 1915 in Sydney. He was living in Sydney at the time and gave his next of kin as his brother John Henry. Ricahrd was a gas maker by trade. He was reported missing in France on 28 Jul 1916, and declared killed in action on 19 Jul 1916 at a court enquiry on 2 Sep 1917.3
  • Richard Parton was killed in action on 19 September 1916 in France at age 33. His memorial stands at V.C. CORNER AUSTRALIAN CEMETERY AND MEMORIAL, FROMELLES.2,4

  • At the age of 26 years, 1 month and 18 days, Thomas Parton married Margaret Moore on 29 March 1853 in Stafford, Staffordshire, England.1,3
  • Thomas Parton and Margaret Moore immigrated to Moreton Bay on 23 August 1882. The family travelled on the Manora. Thomas and Margaret were both 54 years old. With them were their children William aged 14, Annie 18 and Alice aged 7. Thomas and Margaret's sons Thomas and George had come to Moreton Bay on the Scottish Admiralia in 1878.
  • In 1885 Thomas lost a leg in an accident while working with Mr Cox (Cocks) at Pinelands.4
  • On 25 November 1894 Thomas was brutally assulted by his neighbour John Brunnock.5
  • Thomas Parton died on 15 July 1895 in Crow's Nest, Queensland, at age 68.2,6

  • Thomas Parton and Amelia Graving appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1930 living at Mountain Camp North. She carried out home duties. Her son Thomas most likely ran the farm.3
  • At the age of 32 years and 24 days, Thomas Parton married Gladys May Arndt, daughter of August Frederick William Arndt and Augusta Agnes Scheske, on 16 December 1936. Thomas took eventually took over his parents farm at Emu Creek.2,4
  • Thomas Parton was accidentally killed on 21 January 1942 in Queensland at age 37. After his death the property was worked by share farmers until 1951. Gladys then returned to the farm having remarried in 1946.
    The farm is still in the family and consists of 1100 acres fronting the New England Highway and 1200 acres on Oaky Creek, eleven miles away.5,6,4
  • He was buried in Emu Creek Cemetery.5
