  • Gustave Frederick August (Gus) Beutel was born on 14 February 1868 in Schmallen, Brandenburg, Germany. He was the son of Wilhelm Johann Beutel and Wilhelmine Friederike Wass.1,2,3
  • He immigrated to Queensland on 5 April 1881. His parents Wilhelm 40 and Wilhemine 36 arrived on the Earl Graville which had sailed from Plymouth on 17 Dec 1880. The children listed were Wilhelm 14, August (Gus)12, Justine 10, Minna 2 and Louisa who had been born on the journey. Also listed were Wilhelm 55, Marie 60, Friedrich 26 and Ernstine 20.4
  • Conditional approval for Gustave Frederick August (Gus) Beutel's selection of landwas given on 24 November 1888. He selected 39 acres of land at Ravensbourne. August Frederick Beutel also selected land at Ravensbourne at the same time. "For the agricultural township farms adjoining the village of Ravensbourne there was great competition, many of the portions being applied for from four to ten times over. The ballot had to be resorted to in no less than 50 cases; this, with the refunding of the amounts paid by the unsuccessful applicants, necessarily occupied a deal of time, and it was not till half-past 6 O'clock that the business was concluded, and the court closed. By 7 o'clock the whole of the refundments had been paid over to 115 applicants. The 76 portions adjoining the village of Ravensbourne, granted at the land court, were apportioned among 62 selectors, so there is every probability of the village settlement of Ravensbourne proving a success. The total area granted at the court was 5025 acres among 68 applicants."5
  • At the age of 21 years, 4 months and 11 days, Gustave Frederick August (Gus) Beutel married Anna Maria Louisa Wendorf on 25 June 1889 in Ipswich, Queensland.6,7
  • In February 1894 The Queenslander reported that applications for certificates at Ravensbourne for the following selections were adjourned for inspection:- John M'Laughlan, William Richards, August F. Beutel, Gustav F. Beutel, Robert Shedden, Ann Walsh, Donald A McDonald, Hugh M'Erlean, Mary Ryan, Charles McQuillan, Frederick Reuschle, Jacob Weller, Harriet E. Austin, Emma L. Austin, Charles Wallace, Henry McLeod, and William J. H. Austin.8
  • Gustave Frederick August (Gus) Beutel and Anna Maria Louisa Wendorf appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1903 and 1905 living at Ravensbourne. Frederick was a farmer.9
  • On 7 September 1906,his wife, Anna Maria Louisa Wendorf died in Ravensbourne, Queensland, at age 34. Her death was reported in the Queensland Times :- "Death of Mrs. A. F. Beutel. -It is with deep regret (writes a Ravensbourne correspondent, under date of the 29th ultimo) that I have to announce the demise of Mrs. A. F. Beutel (a daughter of Mr. W. Wendore, of Roadvale), which took place at her residence on Friday morning, the 7th of September, after an illness of only four days. Her death is all the more sad, as Mrs. Beutel appeared to be in perfect health the week before, but succumbed to an attack of pneumonia. Dr. Overeud, of Crow's Nest, was in attendance on Wednesday, but unfortunately no hope was entertained of her recovery, and, despite the most careful nursing, she passed quietly away as above stated, surrounded by a num her of relatives and friends, who deeply deplore their loss, for Mrs. Beutel was a charming companion, an affectionate wife, and a loving daughter and sister. Her active friendship and many charities brought her in touch with most of the people of Ravensbourne and the surrounding district. When the sad news was heard expressions of sorrow at the untimely death of a resident so universally esteemed were general. The respect in which de ceased was held was manifested by the largely-attended funeral on the following Sunday. The remains were interred in the Ravensbourne Cemetery, the Rev. B. Bottonmley, Methodist minister, officiating at the grave. Deceased leaves a sorrowing husband and a family of nine-seven girls and two boys, the youngest being only a few days old. Much sympathy has been expressed for the family and relatives, and especially for the bereaved husband. Since the above was written l learn that the deceased’s infant son died on the 12th, the child being only 10 days old. Mr, Beutel has every body's sympathy in his double bereavement."10,11
  • At the age of 44 years, 2 months and 16 days, Gustave Frederick August (Gus) Beutel married Eva Booth Simmons on 30 April 1912 in Toowoomba, Queensland.1,12,13

  • Gustave Frederick August (Gus) Beutel and Eva Booth Simmons appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1921 and 1930 living at Ravensbourne. Gus was a a farmer.15
  • Between 1928 and 1934 Gus ran a Kiosk at the Ravensbourne National Park. An article in the Sunday Mail on the park included "About 80 acres of the park area was taken up over 40 years ago by a selector named Austin, and changed hands many times, and most of the balance by Brennan about 15 years later. The total area of 224 acres was resumed 11 years ago as a national park, the resident originally advocating the reservation being A. F. Beutel, who settled on his selection at Ravensbourne 45 years ago, and has seen the wonderful change from virgin scrub of that period to the productive farming and dairying district of to-day. The resumed selections are all in their natural state, covered with scrub and forest, and were specially chosen for the park reservation so as to include the highest point of the district. At the top, which is alongside the roadway, a small area has been leased for kiosk purposes, and here Mr. Beutel and his wife attend to the requirements of tourists and visitors and give their assistance to those who desire to see the natural beauties of the Park." and "The kiosk is spacious enough to allow of the organisation of dances, which are occasionally held for charity, and for those who follow tennis a court is provided at the rear of the building."16,17,18
  • On 5 May 1932,his son, Bernard Henry Beutel died in Toowoomba General Hospital, Queensland, at age 12. His father was not happy with the treatment he received at the Toowoomba General Hospital and complained to the Board. Beutel, Ravensbourne, at the General Hospital, from infantile paralysis, the chairman reported at a meeting of the Hospital Board on Thursday night that he had received a verbal complaint from Mr. Beutel about the treatment meted out to his son at the hospital. After discussing the matter in commîtee the chairman stated that the board had decided to ask Mr. Beutel to submit his complaint in writing, and the matter would be investigated."19,20
