The gun discharged while he was getting through a fence according to another family story.
  • William McGregor witnessed the burial of Ann McGregor on 31 August 1864 in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales.
  • William McGregor witnessed the burial of Unnamed Son McGregor on 23 May 1867 in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales; The records show the witness as Henry Fountain and a Henry McGregor, but this may have been an error. Lot Bishop, brother of Elizabeth's mother, was the undertaker.
  • About 1870 the McGregor families left the Hunter River and went to live at Bringelly outside Sydney. Jane was married here and the men found work in Sydney, John on the tramways and George in the brickworks. It is rumoured that Mary left William who remained in Maitland.
  • On 23 December 1877,his wife, Mary Stuart died in Holsworthy, New South Wales, Australia, at age 73. Her death was caused by "decay of nature, had been ailing some time - the coroner did not deem it necessary to hold an inquest.". She was shown as 74 years old. Her father was given as John Stewart, cattle dealer, mother unknown. The informant was George McGregor her son of Holsworthy. George gave Scotland as her place of birth and stated she had been in the Colony 30 years. Her first marriage was to a McPherson, the second to a McGregor. One son alive, two daughters dead by first marriage, two sons and two daughters alive by second, and one son and one daughter dead by second. Her death notice appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald on 3 January 1878. It read: "McGREGOR. —December 23, at her late residence, Holsworthy, Mary, the dearly regretted wife of William McGregor, in her 74th year, for many years a resident of Nelson's Plains, Hunter River"

Just what happened to William is a mystery. George was listed as the informant on his mother's death certificate. William is not listed as living or deceased but Mary's death notice indicates he may still have been alive. There is no death registration for him. One possibility is that he later remarried and lived in Maitland. However, where the age matches that of William the other details don't. The 1872 Grenville's Post Office Directory shows a William McGregor of Bringelly and a William McGregor of Maitland suggesting there were two.
  • Its slightly possible that William McGregor married Jane McMullen Dunn on 11 May 1886 in Morpeth Registrar's Office, Morpeth, New South Wales. The certificate showed William Gregor, widower, aged 74, cordial maker from Perthshire, Scotland and Jane McMullen Dunn spinster, aged 26, from Ireland. East Maitland was shown as the place of residence for them both. His father is shown as John McGregor and mother as Jane Ure.
  • William McGregor left a will. It was dated November 2 1887,and he named Jane Mullen McGregor the sole benefactor and executor of his Will. Probate was granted to Jane and his estate was worth 458 pound.
  • The William McGregor married to Jane Dunn died on 23 October 1889 in East Maitland, New South Wales, at age 77. His death certificate shows that he was 77 years old, born Scotland and 30 years in NSW. While the age is correct for our William, the time is NSW is short by about 20 years. He is also shown as an engineer. In Grenvilles Post Office Directory of 1872, there is a William McGregor, engineer listed in Newcastle Street, Maitland. It seems this may not be our William as he was listed in the same Directory as a farmer in Bringelly near Liverpool.
  • William was buried on 24 October 1889 in East Maitland Cemetery. Presbyterian Section.
  • On 23 October 1899 Family hearsay has it that William drowned at sea. The following article appeared in "The Western Australian" :- NEW SOUTH WALES,Sydney, October 21.
The body of William McGregor, the missing cook of the barque Loch Ryan, has been found near the entrance to the Victoria docks. It is believed that McGregor was drowned on the night of the 17th inst There is nothing about the appearance of the corpse to indicate foul play. The death certificate shows this William's father's name was William (not Gregor) - and would be he a cook at age 87?
  • One of William's great grandsons spoke of his grandmother Elizabeth McGregor (nee Fountain) and "'said she had been known affectionately as "Granny McGregor" and often referred to her husband's father(William McGregor) as "Old McGregor" and that she spoke "most disparagingly" about William, who "had a foul temper and was very mean", but she (Elizabeth) was "full of praise for William's wife Mary (Stuart/McPherson.)""
