  • Henry Patrick Sexton enlisted in the AIF, 47 Battalion on 23 October 1916 in Toowoomba. He was a 23 year, 7 month old carpenter born Toowoomba and gave his next of kin as his father Joseph Sexton of Millmerran. He was taken prisioner of war in France on 5 Apr 1918 and returned to England on 22 Nov 1918. He was discharged from the service on 31 May 1919.2
  • He appeared on the Electoral Roll with Teresa Gillespie and Joseph Sexton in 1922 in Millmerran. Joseph was a carpenter and William a labourer. Joseph's son Henry was also a labourer. Theresa gave her address as Pittsworth. The rest of the family still had Millmeran as their address and most likely had not updated their addresses on the roll.3

Joseph Sexton1

  • Joseph Sexton was born in 1853 in New Zealand. He was the son of William Sexton (c 1811-1865) and Mary Wilson (1812-1864.)1,2,3,4,5,6,7
  • At the age of 22 years, Joseph Sexton married Teresa Gillespie on 26 September 1875 in Toowoomba, Queensland.8,9
  • On 15 January 1876 his name was amongst the employees of Cecil Plains Station who donated to the Toowoomba Hospital appeal. Joe gave 5/-.10
  • In April 1879, Joseph was possibly living on Mr Nunn's selection at Cooyar. He is mentioned in a newspaper article, the writer stating " a marked tree-line to Crow's Nest, a distance from Nanango of fifty miles, which we easily accomplished in two days, camping on Tuesday at Munn's [Nunn's] selection, under the hospitable roof of Mr. Joseph Sexton, who showed us the place where the poor fellow Franks -who was found alive after being lost thirteen days in the bush— was discovered.11

  • Joseph Sexton selected land on 5 June 1884. at Emu Creek Portion 34, Parish of Djuan - 160 acres. He paid the first year's annual rent of £4 and a survey fee of £6/1-. His property was inspected on 10 Sep 1889 by Alex Gorring, Bailiff of Crown Lands. At that time the improvements included a three room slat wall cottage with an iron roof to the value of £40; a kitchen garden (paled in): a horse paddock , stockyard and buggy shed; and clearing around the home worth a total of £20. His fencing was worth another £35 - a total value of £95. His neighbours Michael Miller and William Madden swore on 22 July 1889 that he had lived on the selection for the last five years. The Deed of Grant for the property was issued on 5 April 1891.12
  • On 11 October 1884 The Darling Downs Gazette published a list of men who had proved their qualifications for registration in the Electoral District of Stanley, for the portion within the police district of Crow's Nest. Joseph Sexton, living at Emu Creek was amongst them.13
  • On 1 December 1887,Joseph Sexton's daughter, Hester May Sexton was buried in Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery. RC1-006-0026.1
  • On 28 April 1890 Joseph put a request to the Highfields Divisional Board " From Joseph Sexton asking the Board to compensate him for the loss sustained through the flood washing away some of his work at the crossing of Emu Creek near Parton's. — It was decided that the request could not be complied with."14
  • Joseph Sexton's daughter Mary Jane Sexton, aged 20 was referred to as living at Emu Creek in an article published by the Darling Downs Gazette on 17 October 1896.
    ; The Darling Downs Gazette published an article referring to a dance held at Crow's Nest. Mary Jane was amongst the attendees. The article read:- "The first extended night's dance under the auspices of the Crow's Nest Quadrille Assembly took place Thursday night, and was a great success. About eighty people were present, the majority of the fair sex coming a long way to be present. The costumes worn by the ladies were greatly admired.
    Among those present were noticed : Miss Brown (Crow's Nest), pink silk bodice and black skirt; Misses Lalor (2) were neatly attired in pale blue; Miss Brady (Merritt's Creek), cream and navy blue; Mrs. Burke, black relieved with cardinal; Miss Connoly (Merritt's Creek), looked charming in white; Miss C. Connoly white and pink ; Miss Duff, blue and white; Misses Gleeson (2), (Crow's Nest) attired neatly in white with black bows; Mrs. J. Gleeson (Crow's Nest), brown and pink; Miss Hanrahan black and cream ; Miss Hayes (Crow's Nest), cream blouse and black skirt: Miss Hayden, salmon pink nun's veiling trimmed with pink ; Miss Lovelock peacock green costume with cream ; Miss McCarthy, black fingered serge and pale blue bodice; Mrs. Matthews, grey silk with cardinal, black skirt ; Miss McCarthy, while pongee muslin; Miss ODea cashmere with cream ribbon ; Miss Purtell, salmon pink pongee blouse, while silk skirt ; Miss Sexton (Emu Creek), white silk blouse with black skirt; Miss Woodward (Toowoomba), black serge skirt, white blouse with pile blue facings."15
  • In April 1897 Joseph requested from the Highfields Divisional Board that the road leading to his selection at Emu Creek be cleared. The matter was held over.16
  • Around 1900, Joseph sold his property to John Barns, another selector of Crow's Nest and moved to Toowoomba. John Barnes later sold the property to Joseph's old neighbour, John Maddern.17
  • In 1901 Joseph's allotment in Djuan township was valued at £30.18
  • On 11 December 1901,Joseph Sexton's son, Leslie Augustine Sexton was buried in Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery. RC1-006-0026.1
  • Joseph Sexton and Teresa Gillespie appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Eva Street, Toowoomba. Joseph was a carpenter. Their daughter Mary Jane lived with them.19

  • On 18 October 1918 The Darling Downs Gazette reported " Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sexton, of Millmerran have received a communication from their soldier son (Henry) who is a prisoner of war somewhere in Germany. He writes in good spirit, and tells his people not to worry as at time of writing he was well and not doing too badly. The letter bore date 11th June last and promised that if allowed he would follow up with others. This is the first, communication from their son since he was officially reported to he prisonered and naturally the parents are quite pleased for they were getting anxious as to his fate."25
  • On 29 March 1919 Joseph lost a finger. The Brisbane Courier reported " Mr. Joseph Sexton was setting a dog trap on Tuesday in one of his paddocks, and had placed a loaded shot gun on the ground, when something caused it to explode. The shot struck his left hand, blowing off one of his fingers, and causing other severe injuries to the hand. Distiict Ambulance officer Knight rendered first aid, and conveyed him to the Toowoomba Hospital."26

About eighty people were present, the majority of the fair sex coming a long way to be present. The costumes worn by the ladies were greatly admired.
    Among those present were noticed : Miss Brown (Crow's Nest), pink silk bodice and black skirt; Misses Lalor (2) were neatly attired in pale blue; Miss Brady (Merritt's Creek), cream and navy blue; Mrs. Burke, black relieved with cardinal; Miss Connoly (Merritt's Creek), looked charming in white; Miss C. Connoly white and pink ; Miss Duff, blue and white; Misses Gleeson (2), (Crow's Nest) attired neatly in white with black bows; Mrs. J. Gleeson (Crow's Nest), brown and pink; Miss Hanrahan black and cream ; Miss Hayes (Crow's Nest), cream blouse and black skirt: Miss Hayden, salmon pink nun's veiling trimmed with pink ; Miss Lovelock peacock green costume with cream ; Miss McCarthy, black fingered serge and pale blue bodice; Mrs. Matthews, grey silk with cardinal, black skirt ; Miss McCarthy, while pongee muslin; Miss ODea cashmere with cream ribbon ; Miss Purtell, salmon pink pongee blouse, while silk skirt ; Miss Sexton (Emu Creek), white silk blouse with black skirt; Miss Woodward (Toowoomba), black serge skirt, white blouse with pile blue facings."2

  • Cecil Thomas Shannon enlisted in the Australian Army on 31 May 1942 in Crow's Nest. Cecil was living at Ravensbourne at the time he enlisted and gave his next of kin as his father Thomas. He was discharged on 9 Aug 1944 with the rank of Private in the 7th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps.2
  • Cecil purchased a 25 acre property belonging to Mr Campbell at Cabarlah and donated it to the Presbyterian Church as a memorial to his forebares particularly his father Thomas John Shannon. It was named Shannon Memorial Park and was opened by the church on 3 April 1954. Cecil financed his purchase from profits he made from his Shannon's Chips vans which visited almost every country show in Queensland and northern NSW. Cecil was awarded a Order of Australia for his contribution to the Carnimval of Flowers.3
