  • Gwilym Jenkin Whittaker and Lucy Ida Phyllis Maddern were attended school in Goombi in 1954 Gwilym was a farmer and Lucy carried out home duties.9
  • In September 1954 a photograph of all of the Maddern children appeared in the local paper in September 1954. The article under the photo read:- "The Maddern family, "three boys and three girls", with their wives and husbands, held a reunion dinner in Queen's Park kiosk on Saturday on the occasion of Mr and Mrs O Maddern's forty-second wedding anniversary. The "boys" and "girls" are the children of the late John Maddern, Cornish-born farmer who died in 1933 and who took up land in the Crow's Nest District 74 years ago. Front (left to right) Mrs G J Wittaker, Mr Wittaker, Mrs E Maddern, Mr E Maddern, Mrs F Trost and Mr Trost. Back (left to right) Mrs J Maddern, Mr J Maddern, Mrs J W Bidgood, Mr Bidgood, Mr O Maddern, and Mrs O Maddern."10
  • Lucy and Gwilym sold their farm "Woodvale" in 1979 and moved to South Street Toowoomba where they lived until failing health caused them to move into the "Kingswood" hostel at the Toowoomba Garden Settlement.8
  • Gwilym Jenkin Whittaker and Lucy Ida Phyllis Maddern appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1980 living at Kingswood, Stenner Street, Toowoomba.11
  • On 14 June 1989,his wife, Lucy Ida Phyllis Maddern died in Epworth Nursing Home, Toowomba, Queensland, at age 88. In her later years Lucy suffered from dementure.8

The Brisbane Courier reported :-"The Congregational Church, Hume Street, Toowoomba, had been beautified with bowls of white flowers and fern on October 12, when the wedding was celebrated of Mr. Thomas Walter Wickham (youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Janice Wickham, Hume street, Toowoomba) and Miss Ethel Lilly Bretz (eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bretz, Pinelands Crow's Nest). The Rev. C. A. Caporn officiated. Mr. Bretz gave away his daughter, who, wore a richly-beaded mariette frock, finished with small sprays of orange blossoms. Her soft tuile veil was worn with a cap caught under a circlet of orange buds, and she carried a sheaf of arum lilies and asparagus plamosus. After the ceremony the wedding guests were entertained at the residence of the bridegroom's parents. Subsequently Mr. and Mrs. Wickham left for Brisbane and Coolangatta, where the honey- moon was spent. The bride's travelling frock of henna marocain was worn with a henna crinoline hat to match."1

Mrs Ludke was brought into Crows Nest and attended Dr Cole, having been injured internally. Mr Ludke received a broken collar bone and was badly shaken. The sulky was smashed to pieces."7
