  • In 1919 Albert purchased land at Ravensbourne where he conducted a dairy farm. The Brisbane Courier reported in 1931 -" When the Government of the day surveyed the district with the idea of closer settlement in mind, the scheme was imitant of the old American principle of providing community protection against hostile tribes, unknown in the Ravensbourne district. Each 80-acre block holder was allotted an acre township site on which to reside and thus was set up a community, from which the settlers were expected to sally forth each day to work their holding, the women and children remaining behind. Mr A E Baileys fine dairy farm is the last remaining vestige of the scheme" and "The 80-acre dairy farm worked and owned by Mr. A. E. Bailey is a model living area. A comfortable home adjacent to the main road overlooks one of the most picturesque small farms to be found in the State. The growth of paspalum and clover has created a dense mat over the whole of the property. The Jersey herd, numbering slightly more than 20, are the progeny of the Patrick stud. Mr. Bailey was a war pilot, and 12 years ago took up farming on this high-producing area, where the salubrious climate has done much to mend broken health for him. His farm, like others in the district, returns a comfortable living to its owner."3

  • On 12 May 1908 Fred had a lucky escape when he was attached by a bull on his father's farm at Ravensboourne. The following article appeared in the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin on 19 May 1908:- The Toowoomba correspondent of the Brisbane '' Daily Mail," telegraphing on the 12th instant, says :-" A rather sensational experience occurred to a boy named Fred Zropf, aged fifteen years, on his father's farm at Ravensbourne yesterday afternoon. It appears that Zropf was in one of the paddocks when a bull charged him. There was no chance of escape, and the infuriated beast tossed the boy all over the place. Fortunately Zropf was attended by his dog and, although he was being buttered and tossed about by the beast, he was able to retain his presence of mind and urge his dog on to the animal. The dog unmercifully heeled the bull, which at last turned his attention from the boy to the dog, and the latter held the bull at bay until some of the unfortunate lad's brothers rushed to his assistance and drove the beast off. The lad has no bones broken, but he is cut and bruised about terribly. One of the bull's horns pierced his chest. He has a severe lacerated wound on the left thigh and is otherwise badly bruised and cut. His life was undoubtedly saved by the dog attacking the bull."3

  • Conditional approval for Johann (Frederick) Zropf and Johann (Frederick) Zropf's selection of landwas given on 24 November 1888. He selected 79 acres at Beauaraba (near Ravensbourne). He was also fined for withdrawing from the ballot for another 80 acres of land at Ravensbourne. "For the agricultural township farms adjoining the village of Ravensbourne there was great competition, many of the portions being applied for from four to ten times over. The ballot had to be resorted to in no less than 50 cases; this, with the refunding of the amounts paid by the unsuccessful applicants, necessarily occupied a deal of time, and it was not till half-past 6 O'clock that the business was concluded, and the court closed. By 7 o'clock the whole of the refundments had been paid over to 115 applicants. The 76 portions adjoining the village of Ravensbourne, granted at the land court, were apportioned among 62 selectors, so there is every probability of the village settlement of Ravensbourne proving a success. The total area granted at the court was 5025 acres among 68 applicants."8

A kitchen annexe was added at the back. Later a store room to one side.
In 2003 the cottage was moved to Chapman Park at Hampton where it was reconstructed using many of the old-style building techniques. It now houses the Visitors Information Centre.12,13

Frederick August Zupp1

M, b. 1838, d. 6 August 1897
  • Frederick August Zupp was born in 1838 in Preussenhof.1
  • He was the son of Carl Zupp and Henriette Zunker.2
  • Frederick August Zupp married Amelia Gotz circa 1863.3
  • Frederick August Zupp and Amelia Gotz immigrated to Brisbane on 20 August 1866. Frederick 28 and Emilie 27 travelled on the Beausite withtheir son Wilhelm aged 1 year 3 months. Fredericks family had arrived in Queensland the previous year.4
  • On 4 December 1873,his wife, Amelia Gotz died in Spring Creek, Toowoomba, Queensland. Emily died after a dray in which she was riding capsized. The Darling Downs Gazette reported: - “A magisterial inquiry was held at the Police Office yesterday touching the death of Amelia Zupp who was thrown from a dray about noon of the 4th inst. The following evidence was elicited:- Frederick Zupp deposed: I am a farmer residing at Spring Creek; yesterday about noon I came into Toowoomba with my wife and baby and Mrs. Reithmuller; I was driving my dray with two horses; on ?y way from Toowoomba my wife and sister-in-law were seated in the dray, my wife having the baby in her lap; while descending a hill on the Spring Creek side of the racecourse the reins got under the leader's tail; I got down to put them right and was jammed against the fence; the horses bolted with the dray; they went about half a mile; they got out of my sight; I ran after the dray, and when I got up the dray was upset; my wife's sister was walking about and my wife lay on the ground about six feet from the dray; she was partly sitting up leaning on some parcels; the child was lying beside her; she said something about the child; I sent for Dr. Andersonn; a spring cart was passing, and we put her in the cart took her home: Dr. Anderson came out immediately ; the child was not hurt; my wife's sister was a little bruised ; my wife died about 1 o’clock in the afternoon; she spoke one or two words, calling upon me and the child ; I have four children; my wife was thirty-five years of age; she was a German.

Caroline Reithmuller deposed : I am sister of the deceased Amelia Zupp ; I was seated in my brother in-law's dray when it went out from Toowoomba ; the horses went quietly until they reached the hill on the Spring Creek side of the race course ; one of the reins got under the shaft of the dray, when Zupp jumped down to put them in order ; the horses ran on to the fence and Zupp jumped back to save himself ; the horses then bolted and ran for about half -a- mile ; one of the wheels then struck a stump and the dray fell over; my sister and myself, were thrown to the ground ; I was only slightly bruised having been thrown clear of the dray ; when I got up I saw my sister lying near the dray with her baby beside her ; I cannot say whether the dray struck my sister ; I told my sister to get up, but she pointed only to the baby and said there is the child ; Caspar Heinrich came by and lifted my sister from the ground, and supported her until her husband arrived ; she was afterwards taken home in a spring cart and attended by Dr. Anderson ; about an hour after the accident my sister died ; the baby was not hurt ; at her house she said she pitied the poor man and her child ; she said she felt as if her back was broken, and kept calling for water. Dr. Anderson deposed : Shortly after 12 o'clock yesterday I was called to see the deceased, Amelia Zupp; when I reached the house, a few minutes afterwards, I saw deceased ; she was in a state of collapse ; I administered restoratives, but she died a few minutes after I arrived ; I believe death was caused by internal injuries arising from a violent fall from a dray."5,6
