  • At the age of 20 years, Esther Louise Hartwig married Alexis Wilhelm Ferdinand Hoppe, son of Hugo Paul Hoppe and Johanna Emelie Minge, in March 1925 in Groomsville, Queensland. On March 17, The Brisbane Courier reported:- "The marriage of Miss Esther Hartwig, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. F. Hartwig, of Groomsville, to Mr. Alex. Hoppe, second son of the late Mr. Hoppe and Mrs. Erb, was solemnised recently at the residence of the bride's parents, Rev. A. R. Reuther officiating. The house was decorated for the occasion with masses of greenery and flowers, and festoons of coloured ribbon streamers, while palms were arranged in the drawing room, where the ceremony took place. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a wedding gown of ivory satin Marocain, with sleeves of white georgette, the wide girdle being composed of richly beaded georgette, caught at one side with a cabochon of orange blossom. A bouquet of white asters and fern tied with satin ribbons was carried, and she wore a simple tulle veil banded to the head with a coronet of white flowers. Misses May Hartwig (sister of the bride) and Richa Erb were the bridesmaids. Miss Hartwig wore a frock of shell-pink crepe de Chine, trimmed with softly draped side panels of cream lace, finished at one side of the waist with a sky-blue ribbon rosette, and Miss Erb was gowned in white fugi silk. Both wore hats to match their frocks, and carried posies of white roses and fern tied with pink steamers. Mr. Henry Helsham carried out the duties of best man, and Mr. Andrew Hartwig was groomsman. After the ceremony a reception and wedding breakfast took place, the tables being decorated with asters and maidenhair fern. The bride's mother was gowned in black satin Marocain, relieved with cabochons of jet, and she wore a black hat to match. In the evening a dance was held, and later Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Hoppe left for Mackay, where they will in future reside, the bride travelling in a lemon Marocain costume trimmed with touches of Oriental silk, and a black hat finished with tiny sprays of hand- made flowers and streamers."2,3
