“ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING. BOY SHOT DEAD BY HIS BROTHER
A Toowoomba message reports: A tragic shooting accident, which resulted in the death of a young boy, Max Lowien, aged 101/2 years, occurred at Meringandan.
Max Lowien and his brother, Roy, aged 14 1/2; years, had been playing with a pea rifle during the morning, and shortly after 4 o'clock on Sunday afternoon they left him to bring in the cows. There was in the house a 22 calibre revolver, and the boys must have taken this. They had just left the house, and were only a few paces from the front gate, when Max was seen to fall. His uncle, who was driving along the road, asked what was wrong with Max, and the elder boy answered, 'Nothing.' His uncle got off the trap, and went to the boy, who was bleeding, and had been shot just over tho heart. Death was instantaneous. The older boy said he was not aware that he had discharged the revolver, but becoming frightened, he threw the weapon away. Later, he showed Constable Johnson, of Meringandan, where the revolver was. The shooting, it is stated, was quiet accidental."5,6,4,7

  • Johann August Wolski was born on 24 November 1840 in Minstenberg, Germany. He was the son of Michael Wolski and Christine Glume.1,2,3,4
  • He was the son of Michael Wolski and Christine Glume.
  • At the age of 24 years, Johann August Wolski married Eva Ronionek in 1865 in Boden, Stuben, Germany.1,4
  • Johann August Wolski and Eva Ronionek immigrated to Queensland on 21 August 1888. Johann aged 46, and Eva 43, travelled on the Bulimba with their children Gottfried 9, Auguste 14, Heinrich 7 and the infant Gustav who died on the journey. Their eldest son Wilhelm, remained behind in Germany but later came to Queensland in1893.5
  • Johann August Wolski selected land in 1890 in Djuan. He chose 160 acres Portion 88v, Parish of Djuan.6
  • In 1901, Johann August Wolski and Wilhelm Wolski lived in Djuan. Wilhelm, Henry and John were listed on the Crow's Nest Post Office directory farmers of Djuan.7
  • Johann August Wolski and Eva Ronionek appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Djuan. John was a farmer as were their sons Gottfried and Heinrich.8
  • Johann August Wolski died on 1 December 1910 in Djuan at age 70.2,4
  • He was buried on 3 December 1910 in Bergen Djuan Cemetery.3
  • In 1978 a descendant of Johann and Eva wrote the following (sic):-
"Johann and Eva Wolski, who were originally of Polish descent, became German citizens owing to the capture of part of Poland during a War between those two countries.
In the year 1885 the couple and their family migrated to Australia and first lived at Highfields for about fifteen months. They then selected 160 acres of land at Djuan where they lived for the rest of their lives. The four children of the family were all born in Germany - Wilhelm, Gottfried, Heinrich and Earnestina.

Wilhelm, who married Caralone Morgenstern before coming to this country selected land at Upper Djuan and engaged in farming including dairying, pig raising, maize, wheat and potato growing. They reared a family of five boys and five girls.

Gottfried Wolski who was married at Douglas to Elsie Morgenstern carried on the property previously selected by his father and engaged in the same type of farming as his elder brother, this being the main industries in those days. They raised a family of five boys and three girls.

Heinrich was married to Lena Schilf of Haden and settled on land adjacent to his father where he also carried on similar lines as his two brothers. They raised a family of seven boys and three girls.

Earnestina was married to Gustav Graf before coming to this country
and also lived in the Djuan area.

The total descendants of the original couple of Johann and Eva Wolski would be approximately 376 and are engaged in a wide range of occupations in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. The majority were keen sportsmen particularly tennis, cricket, and football and table-tennis.
    R. Wolski"

NOTE:- There are a few errors in the above - Johann and Eva arrived in 1888 not 1885; Ernestina married Gustav Graf in 1891 in Queensland not in Germany.9
