William Crawford

M, b. 15 August 1819, d. 1893

This photo was discovered behind a framed portrait of Henry Crawford and may be a photo of his parents William and Margaret Crawford of Derryneeve.
  • William Crawford was born on 15 August 1819 in Dereneive (Derryneeve), County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.1
  • He was the son of William Crawford and Sarah Loane.
  • William Crawford married Margaret Maxwell circa 1837 in Ireland.
  • On 2 January 1878 Sarah's father William wrote this letter to her: - (sic)
    "Dereneive
    January 2nd 1878
My very dear and mutch loved Sarah Jane,
We recieved your kind letter yesterday, bearing date October 25th which give us to know that you and Joseph and children and also Robert John William and wife and Baby were all in good health, a blessing which we all enjoy at present thanks be to the giver of all goodness for His kind dealings to us His unworthy Creatures.
My dear Sarah Jane must beg you to forgive me for not answering your last letter. It was nor neglect nor forgetfulness on my part, for you were not one day out of my mind since that time I remembered you and your husband and children three times a day at the throne of grace.
But the reason I did not write was because James and Henry and Caroline was urging me to let them go to Australia and I did not know whether I might let them go or not and that what kept me from writing.
...I would know whether I would fit them out and let them go. I believe they will not go at this time the more it is easy getting to New South Wales at present they would get away for 2 pounds each but er have considered it is better to wait a while and go all together if the Lord spares life and health as I am tired letting them go in parts. Your Uncle James Moore has a son and a daughter Christopher going to New South Wales. They are to sail sometime this month. I don't know the day yet. They are to be with us tomorrow to take their dinner with us. I suppose for the last time. They are of mind to call with uncle John Johnston to see them if all bees well. It is their Uncle Christopher Moore that lives in the Colony Victoria that they are pushing. You say Robert John has got no housekeeper yet Margaret Moore would make a good housekeeper in this country but I don't know whether she might know much about it in Australia or not. But one thing I believe she is a good Christian and that hides a good many defects in temporal affairs.
I am thankful to Joseph for the newspaper. It is a token of kindness. Dear Sarah our youngest one Leasha bees often asking us what sort of girl you were. She would like to see you. She says we have a letter from William Wilson a few days ago.........and him and family is well Eliza and him and family is well Also their friends over here. This year the potatoes is as bad as they were the first year they failed. I think if the people would meet with another season like this they would to start in any Colony they get to. I think it would be easier taking up land in Queensland than in New South Wales if it would be near as good but I suppose it is not as good as New South Wales.
We are still in hopes of seeing you all yet if the Lord spares life and health. There will be 3 of William Moffits sons in the ship with the Moores and a daughter of widow James Brandons of ................in the ship with them.
I must conclude by saying your mother, brothers, and sisters joins me in sending our love to you and Joseph and son and daughter and William and wife and Baby and Robert John in the kindest manner
    From your ever loving parents
    William and Margaret Crawford
    Please write soon."2

John Thomas Creed1

M, b. 1887, d. 1959
  • John Thomas Creed was born in 1887 in Queensland.1
  • He was the son of William Creed and Harriet Page.1
  • John Thomas Creed was named a co-defendant when Harry Edser applied to have his marriage to Ada Rose Haines dissolved in Oct 1908
; The marriage was not a success and on 20 October 1908, The Brisbane Courier reported:- " APPLICATION FOR DISSOLUTION
OF MARRIAGE. Harry Edser, Crow's Nest farmer, applied for a dissolution of his marriage with Ada Rose Edser, nee Haines, on the grounds of adultery with James Creed, of Crow's Nest, bullock driver and Alfred Williams, of Crow's Nest, painter, who were joined as co-defendants. Mr McGregor (instructed by Messers Crouch and Darvall, town agents for Messrs. Eden and Groom, Toowoomba) appeared for the plaintiff, and there was no appearance of defendant or co-defendants. The petition set out that the parties were married on March 13, 1906, according to the rights of the Methodist Church and they lived together at Pinelands. Adultery was alleged to have taken place with Creed, and on other dates with Williams.
His honour asked if there was any issue of marriage, and was informed there was a child, of which, however, plaintiff denied the paternity. His Honour held that this should appear in the petition. An adjournment was then granted in order the council might site authorities for amending the petition without re-service.
Mr McGregor, on the court resuming, said he had not been able to find authority for amending without re-service, but, according to 36 L JMC 63 (1901) Challon v Challon, evidence could be taken at this stage.
His Honour accordingly granted leave to amend the plaint and affidavit by stating the facts as to issue, and also for re-service, on the usual conditions. Evidence was then called.
Plaintiff gave evidence in support of the petition. After living with his wife at Pinelands for about three months he had quarrelled with her mother and because he would not allow the mother to continue to reside with them his wife left him. A child was subsequently born of which the witness denied any paternity. Defendant afterwards went to reside at the home of her brother, George Haines. Witness then gave evidence as to what he had seen between defendant and the co-defendants.
Ambrose Bearton, Alfred Edser, and E Jackson, clerks in the employ of Messrs Eden and Groom, solicitors, gave corroborative evidence.
At this stage the case was adjourned to November 13."2,3,4
