- The Immigrant Ancestors In the vast majority of cases our ancestors came from very humble backgrounds. They were farmers, labourers, factory workers, miners and saddlers. They chose to immigrate to Australia for a number of reasons. Some came to escape poverty and an uncertain future at home. Others came to join family members who had already come to Australia, and others in search of gold. Whatever the reason, they came and they stayed and they made a life for themselves and their families. They suffered much hardship and most likely many disappointments along the way, but they did it with courage. Because of them we are what we are today.
