Sarah Ellen Jefferis. According to family hearsay this photo was taken just before Sarah died as result of complications from her burns. A lock of her hair was kept by her mother Emily in the sewing box that she had brought with her on her voyage to Australia. Sadly the lock of hair is now lost.
The sewing box brought to Australia by Emily Ann Jefferis (nee Bright) when she and Robert Kemp Jefferis immigrated to Melbourne on the "Swiftsure" in 1863.
This photo was taken on 24 June 1919, Alton. A vacant building site is being used as a market known as Market Square. The 18th Century house "Lady Place" in the corner of Market Square was aquired at the site of a proposed new library. However, it was demolished and the site was incorporated into a car park.
