  • At the age of 19 years, 7 months and 30 days, Alice Ann Gillies married Egbert Thomas Spencer Lower Maddern, son of John Maddern and Mary Ann Cossart, on 15 February 1911 in Emu Creek, Crow's Nest, Queensland. It was a double wedding with Alice's sister Jessie Jane and James Perkins held at the home of Frank and Mary Gillies.4

    children.

  • On 4 October 1925,Alice Ann Gillies's father, Francis Gillies died in Emu Creek, Crow's Nest, Queensland, at age 75.6
  • Between 11 October 1926 and 15 October 1926 the Maddern house burnt down. "A daughter recalled, "The house was up near Reg's barn. It was about 1926; Mum was away with Granddad (John Maddern). My little sister had been crawling on the verandah and got a splinter in her leg. Mum had to take her to the doctor. My older sister was at home and she put a log in stove, it was too long and the door would not close. A tea towel was hanging across the stove and it must have caught light. She went down stairs to play with my younger brother who was two. My oldest sister was at home too, but went to make sure the cattle had water. Dad was working over the hill with another man and saw the smoke. The children playing outside didn't know the house was on fire. The man threw one drawer out of the window and that was all that was saved. It was a two story house and the car was underneath, and Oldsmobile or Huppmobile. It was Dad's first car. He managed to save the car. My oldest brother Bill was away at boarding school at Grammar. My sister and I were very concerned about our "celluloid" dolls that they had received for Christmas. We used to walk to school at Jubilee Vale, sometimes ride. We came home to find the house on fire. After the fire all our belongings were lost, only the car and the clothes we had on remained. We went to live with Granddad in Crow's Nest (opposite the old racetrack up on a hill). Dad was angry that his children had to go to school in sandshoes. Orlando owned "Glenmore: and sold it to Dad when he moved to Stanthorpe. Dad added some rooms to make space for the children, Orlando only had four. Dad had planned to send us all away to Boarding school but couldn't afford to after the fire."
According to another source, the house burnt down at the beginning of the week that Ida Hayden (daughter of William Gregory Bidgood, died. Since she died on 15 October, the house most likely burnt down between the 11th and 13th of October 1926. The old barn and some other stumps can still be seen where the house and other buildings once stood.7,8,9

A photograph of all of the Maddern children appeared in the local paper in September 1954. The article under the photo read:- "The Maddern family, "three boys and three girls", with their wives and husbands, held a reunion dinner in Queen's Park kiosk on Saturday on the occasion of Mr and Mrs O Maddern's forty-second wedding anniversary. The "boys" and "girls" are the children of the late John Maddern, Cornish-born farmer who died in 1933 and who took up land in the Crow's Nest District 74 years ago. Francis Gillies1

M, b. 10 August 1850, d. 4 October 1925

Frank Gillies c 1907
  • Francis Gillies was also known as Frank Bridgeman.
  • He was born on 10 August 1850 in Meme, McIntyre River, Queensland.2,3,4
  • He was the son of Thomas Bridgeman and Jane Eyles.
  • Francis Gillies was baptized on 2 July 1854 in the Parish of Moreton Bay, County of Stanley, NSW (Brisbane). (Queensland was not yet a separate State) His sisters Ellen, who was born at Miles, and Catherine, born under a wagon in Fortitude Valley, were christened at the same time.2,5
  • He witnessed the marriage of William Gillis and Jane Eyles on 29 August 1861 in Bogandilla Station, Dulacca, Queensland, Australia; The marriage took place at Boggandilla Station where both Jane and William lived, William being an overseer of the station at the time. Witnesses were Charles Eyles (Charles Bridgeman aged 16) and Francis Eyles (Frank Gillies aged 11). Jane and William may have wanted the minister to believe that that Jane was single, and they didn't have several children between them. Hence Charles and Frances Eyles were Jane's brothers for the purpose of the marriage.4,6
  • In January 1868 Francis Gillies and William Gillis were involved in a court case regarding a herd of cattle. During the hearing William stated that he had sold his cattle to Francis Eyles Bridgeman and that Bridgeman was his step son. Frank stated that he and his brother (Chalres) and sister (this would be Ellen as Jane jnr was married to Robert Nelder in 1867) lived in a house next to Gillis. Frank was 17 at the time, but gave his age as 14. Ellen would have been 15. Catherine, aged 13 may have been living with Jane and William.7
  • On 2 July 1874 Frank and William owned land adjourning that of John Herbert who gave them notice, via an advertisement in The Darling Downs Gazette that he intended fencing his land.
It read:- Fencing Notice. To F. Gillies, or owner of Portions 28 and 29, Parish Meringandan, County of Aubigny; and to William Gillies, or owner of Home stead Selection adjoining Portion 39, Parish Meringandan. TAKE NOTICE that I intend to fencing my Portions, 30, 31, and 39, adjoining your allotments, and unless your portion of the dividing fence is completed within three months from this date, I shall have the same done at your risk and expense. JOHN HERBERT. Toowoomba, July 2, 1874.8
  • Francis Gillies witnessed the will of William Gillis on 18 September 1874 in "Walton Farm", Meringandan; It read - This is the last will and testament of me William Gillis of Walton Farm in the parrash of Meringandan after payment of any just debts funerl and testamtary Epenses I give devise and bequeath unto Jane Gillis my wife of all my Real and personl estate and I hearby appoint Jane Gillis my wife executor of this my last will as witness my hand this day 18th September 1874 – William Gillis (SIC)

Signed and acknowledged by the said William Gillis the testator as and for his last will and Testament in the presence of us, being present at the same time who at his requet in this presence, and in the presence of each other, have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses ---- Robert Grant, Francis Gillis

  • Francis Gillies selected land - the Darling Downs Gazette advertised that Frank's application for 160 acres of land in Meringandan parish had been conditionally approved
    on 12 June 1875.10
  • At the age of 26 years, 3 months and 10 days, Francis Gillies married Mary Robinson, daughter of James Robinson and Elizabeth Dixon, on 20 November 1876. The ceremony was held at the bridegrooms parent's house (that of Jane and William Gillis) at Gowrie Little Plain near Meringandan. Frank's occupation was a farmer, Mary's assistant housekeeper. He was 25 and she was 22 and both gave their usual residence as Meringandan. When Frank signed the marriage register he signed his name a GILLIES instead of Gillis. The transcript of the marriage shows his parents, who witnessed the marriage, as William and Jane GILLIES also. Frank and his descendants have used that spelling ever since. Family hearsay has it that perhaps because Frank was not Williams child but Thomas Bridgemans he deliberately changed his name.11,12
  • On 23 July 1879 The Darling Downs Gazette published a list on contributors to the Hospital Fund. Frank's name was listed among Argyle Mills employees. He had donated 10/-.13
  • On 9 January 1881,Francis Gillies's daughter, Rose Elizabeth Gillies was born in Crow's Nest, Queensland. Her birth registration states her father was a 35 year old carrier born Maitland NSW (this information is incorrect. The details belong to the next birth registered that of Ellen Caroline Brown - daughter of Edward Brown). Her parents were married 22 May 1876 (incorrect) at Meringandan Downs and her mother was formerly Robinson born York, England aged 26 years. The informant was Francis Gillies of Crow's Nest and witness to the birth Mrs Robinson.14,15
  • In 1883 Francis Gillies was paying rates to the Crow's Nest Shire Council for Portion 785 an area of 80 acres in Geham.16
  • In May 1885.
  • On 27 May 1885,Francis Gillies's daughter, Jessie Jane Gillies was born in Geham, Queensland. Frank was a labourer at Geham at the time of Jessie's birth. A Mrs Nelder was the nurse present at the birth, most likely Frank's half sister Jane or her mother in law.17,18
  • In 1886 Francis Gillies was paying rates to the Crow's Nest Shire Council for allotment 15 Crows Nest Township, and 320 acres at Djuan, as well as 80 acres at Geham.16
  • Just when Frank and his family moved to Emu Creek is unclear. James Herbert was born in Crows Nest in 1887, but John Thomas was born in Emu Creek in 1889. Frank and Mary's four children, William, Rose, Frank & Jessie were enrolled in the Crow's Nest School until 1892. Mary may have stayed in Crows Nest with the children until Frank had cleared the block at Djuan (Emu Creek) and built a house. In August 1882, the education department had proposed a school be built at Bum Bum Creek. Frank & Mary's five eldest children including Herbert were listed as potential students. This school was never built. However, a school was built near Frank's property around 1892. This was the Moss View School, and several of the the Gillies children would be in this photo - perhaps Walter(13), Jessie (11), and James Herbert (9). Alice may have been too young. Other children in the photo would be Orlando (12) and Egbert (9) Maddern.19
  • On 21 January 1890 Mary was staying at Ebenezer with her parents at the time their sixth child, John Thomas died at the age of six months.
  • He enrolled his children Rose, Frank and Jessie at Crow's Nest State School in 1891.20
  • On 5 February 1891Francis Gillies was named as a beneficiary of Jane Eyles's will. She bequeathed her daughter Agnes, the wife of John McGregor eight cows, and her daughter Ida wife of Walter Wood eight cows also (to be selected after Agnes had chosen hers). She bequeathed her son William Patrick the threshing machine; her daughter Alice Anderson portion 969, parish of Meringandan (80 acres); her daughter Agnes McGregor portions 1928 and 973, parish of Meringandan (80 acres in total); forty pound each to Chalres Walter Bridgeman, William Patrick Gillis, Francis Gillis, Alice Anderson, Catherine Hill, and Jane Graham. The remainder of her estate was to be sold by her executors Francis Gillis and John McGregor and distributed equally between Charles Walter Bridegman, William Patrick Gillis, Francis Gillis, Alice Anderson, Agnes McGregor, Ida Wood, Catherine Hill, and Jane Graham. Her daughter Helen (Ellen) Burgess was not mentioned in the will.21
  • On 29 August 1892 Frank added the names of his children William 12, Rose 10, Walter 8, Jessy 6 and Herbert 5 to the list of children likely to attend the proposed new Moss View School that was to be established on land near Frank property at Emu Creek. • He was buried on 6 October 1925 in Crow's Nest Cemetery. Mary and Frank's gravestone reads-
Sacred to the memory of Mary gillies who died april 3rd 1917 aged 62 years and also her beloved husband frank gillies died 11th october 1925 aged 77 years.29,30
  • The following article appeared in The Queenslander on 24 October 1925. "Mr. Frank Gillies, one of the pioneers of the Crow's Nest district, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. E. Maddern, Emu Creek on October 5. Deceased was born at Meme, Mclntyre Brook, Queensland, in 1848. He married Miss Mary Robinson at Meringandan in 1873, shortly afterwards going to the Crow's Nest district, where he resided until his death. His wife died in 1917, and his son, Mr. J. H. Gillies, died in the same year.
The late Mr. Gillies was of a quiet and kindly disposition. When he went to the Crow'f Nest district, the country was wild, and the blacks were numerous and treacherous. In those days, Mr. Gillies not only held the respect of the few white settlers, but also that of the aboriginals. He saved many lives by self sacrifice and hardihood when called upon to assist in the search for unfortunate individuals who had been lost in the bush. He had been known to spend nights and days in the bush, suffering from hunger and exposure, tracking them."31
  • The Methodist Church in Crow's Nest erected memorial plaques to early Crow's Nest Pioneers on the Church fence. Frank & Mary's names were amongst them.32
