  • At the age of 20 years and 1 month, Emma Thatcher married Richard Askin on 26 July 1871 in Shrewbury, Shopshire, England. At the time of his marriage he was a railway brakesman and Emma was a dressmaker. Richard and Emma lived in Shopshire, where Thomas was born, for a few years before moving down to Crewe in Cheshire where Mary Ann and Henry were born. They then moved back to Shopshire. Ada and Arthur were born there before the family left for Australia.1,4,5
  • Emma Thatcher and Richard Askin immigrated to Queensland on 2 April 1883. Richard and Emma, both 32, travelled with their five children Thomas 10, Mary 8, Henry 7, Ada 4 and Arthur 2 on the Duke of Devonshire. According to Richard's obituary the family spent time in Cambooya before moving to Mount Pleasant, Geham and then Crow's Nest.6,7
  • Emma Thatcher witnessed the marriage of John Barnes and Harriet Ann Thatcher on 3 May 1883 in Queensland; They were married at the residence of Richard Askin, North Street, Toowoomba. Harriet was the sister of the Rev Thatcher and Emma Thatcher, Richard Askin's wife.
    John and Harriet lived in a tent until he built a house of bush timber. Here they carried on dairying and cattle raising until retiring.8,9
  • On 8 October 1898, The Queenslander published a list of selectors whose Agricultural Homestead applications had been accepted. Richard had selected 120 acres at Emu Creek.10

  • Her marriage, at 21 years and 9 months, to David John Jones was registered in the December 1867 Quarter in Shrewsbury Registration District. David died in early 1870 in Shrewsbury aged 30 years.6,7
  • Her marriage, at 24 years and 9 months, to Samuel Lawley was registered in the December 1870 Quarter in Shrewsbury Registration District. Samuel died in late 1871 in London aged 40 years.8,9
  • At the age of 37 years, 2 months and 25 days, Harriet Ann Thatcher married John Barnes, son of Benjamin Prowse Barnes and Jane Badcock, on 3 May 1883 in Queensland. They were married at the residence of Richard Askin, North Street, Toowoomba. Harriet was the sister of the Rev Thatcher and Emma Thatcher, Richard Askin's wife.
    John and Harriet lived in a tent until he built a house of bush timber. Here they carried on dairying and cattle raising until retiring.10,1

It appears that his vehicle was upset by some means, and he was thrown out, receiving a scalp wound and other bruises. We learn learn is doing as well as can be expected."8

Six weeks ago Mr. Thatcher took suddenly ill, his malady being enteric fever in a most malignant form. On Monday evening it was evident that he was sinking rapidly and shortly after mid-night he passeed quietly away. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon last and was the largest ever witnessed in Laidley."3,4

  • Heinrich (Henry) Thies witnessed the death of William Gillis on 23 October 1882 in Gowrie Little Plain, Queensland; William died of an unknown cause and was buried by order of the Police Magistrate. His son William was the informant of his father's death and he was shown as 76 years old, a blacksmith, born Co. Cork and in the Colony for 35 years. According to William, William senior was married in Brisbane 35 years prior to his death. His children were listed as Frank 30, Ellen 28, Kate 26, William 23, Alice 21, Agnes 20 and Ida 10 (all of the children were actually 2 years older than this).
    The following article appeared in the Darling Downs Gazette dated 25th October 1882 "PAINFULLY SUDDEN DEATH - Through the courtesy of the police, we learn of the sudden death of Mr William Gillis, of Gowrie Little Plain. The sad event occurred about noon on Monday last. The deceased was in the act of stooping to pick up some nails when he fell over, and on being raised expired after a few moments in the arms of his son in law. The deceased who was much respected was about seventy years of age and leaves a widow and children and grandchildren. He had for a long period been a resident in the district."6,7
