  • Alfred Edser was a witness when his brother Harry Edser applied for dissolution of his marriage to Ada Rose Haines in Oct 1908
; The marriage was not a success and on 20 October 1908, The Brisbane Courier reported:- " APPLICATION FOR DISSOLUTION
OF MARRIAGE. Harry Edser, Crow's Nest farmer, applied for a dissolution of his marriage with Ada Rose Edser, nee Haines, on the grounds of adultery with James Creed, of Crow's Nest, bullock driver and Alfred Williams, of Crow's Nest, painter, who were joined as co-defendants. Mr McGregor (instructed by Messers Crouch and Darvall, town agents for Messrs. Eden and Groom, Toowoomba) appeared for the plaintiff, and there was no appearance of defendant or co-defendants. The petition set out that the parties were married on March 13, 1906, according to the rights of the Methodist Church and they lived together at Pinelands. Adultery was alleged to have taken place with Creed, and on other dates with Williams.
His honour asked if there was any issue of marriage, and was informed there was a child, of which, however, plaintiff denied the paternity. His Honour held that this should appear in the petition. An adjournment was then granted in order the council might site authorities for amending the petition without re-service.
Mr McGregor, on the court resuming, said he had not been able to find authority for amending without re-service, but, according to 36 L JMC 63 (1901) Challon v Challon, evidence could be taken at this stage.
His Honour accordingly granted leave to amend the plaint and affidavit by stating the facts as to issue, and also for re-service, on the usual conditions. Evidence was then called.
Plaintiff gave evidence in support of the petition. After living with his wife at Pinelands for about three months he had quarrelled with her mother and because he would not allow the mother to continue to reside with them his wife left him. A child was subsequently born of which the witness denied any paternity. Defendant afterwards went to reside at the home of her brother, George Haines. Witness then gave evidence as to what he had seen between defendant and the co-defendants.
Ambrose Bearton, Alfred Edser, and E Jackson, clerks in the employ of Messrs Eden and Groom, solicitors, gave corroborative evidence.
At this stage the case was adjourned to November 13."4,5,6

  • Harry Edser appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Crow's Nest. He was a farmer. His brother Joseph jnr Edser and sister Phoebe also lived at Crow's Nest.7
  • In February 1904 Harry was thought to have died in a fire that destroyed a boarding house belonging to Mrs Harris (SHOULD READ - HAINES)- his prospective mother-in-law. The Darling Downs' Gazette reported " The stillness of the morning was broken here by the engine whistle, and old and young turned out between the hours of 3 and 4 to see the whole of the township lit up from end to end with the flame from the large boarding house kept and owned by Mrs. Harris, mother of Mrs Wockner, Goombungee Hotel. On arrival at the fire it was seen that no efforts of our - hastily - formed fire brigade, armed with billys, basins, buckets, and tubs, could avail to save the main building, and efforts were made to save the kitchen, detached. It caught at several places, but was kept under by willing hands. It is n very serious loss to Mrs. Harris, and although insured for £450, nearly everything was destroyed. Had it been a stormy night or a westerly wind blowing nothing could have saved the whole of the block on that side down to and including Nolan's Hotel. A rumour went round the crowd that Harry Edser, intended son-in-law of Mrs Harris, had perished, but inquiries made proved this fortunately false. A co-incidence with this fire is that Edser's barn was burned about three weeks' ago, and - it contained a dray and set of harness, both belonging to Mrs. Harris, so she is a double loser by fire in a short time."8
  • He acquired land circa 1905 in Pinelands He owned 200 acres of land which was possibly Portios 47 (84 acres owned by A Humberdross) and 117v (160 acres owned by William A. Richardson). He dairy farmed but sold the property and bought a general store with petrol bowsers in Crow's Nest.6,9

An Inquiry was conducted before Mr PCM Burne PM yesterday into a fire which occurred at Emu Creek road on December 25 whereby a six-wheel motor truck the property of James Reddlex and Harry Edser was destroyed and a blacksmiths shop the property of Thomas J Williams, Windsor, Brisbane was damaged. Plain clothes Constable Beahan said that Harry Edser denied that he had had any conversation with Reddlex about the destruction of the truck. Later Reddlex in the presence of Edser said Edser asked him what he was going to do about the payments on the truck and he told him that he could not keep the payments up. Reddlex then said to Edser "You then asked me to take the truck out and got a load of pine and set fire to it on the way in ." Edser replied: " What are you trying to put me in for. I have always been a good friend to you?" In reply to witness Reddlex, stated that on another occasion Edser asked him to put the truck in an old blacksmiths shop where he could set fire to it or get some one else to do it. Constable Beahan said he had not been able to ascertain how the fire originated nor connect any one with its origin. The inquiry was adjourned to Brisbane."17
