James William Jull

  • James William Jull was born in 1835 in Boughton, Kent, England. He was the son of Charles Edward Jull and Hannah Cuckow.
  • He immigrated to Sydney in 1857. James travelled on the Anna Maria. He was 21 and appeared to have travelled alone.
  • At the age of 23 years, James William Jull married Mary Ann White, daughter of William Blessley White and Ann Spencer, in 1858 in Glebe, Sydney, New South Wales. (Surname spelt JULT on marriage record). They had 10 children, the first being born at Bombala in the Snowy Mountains. Two more children were born in Sydney before the family moved to Queensland. They were living at Drayton at the time James took up his selection at Haden in 1878.
  • On 26 April 1877,James William Jull's daughter, Annie Jull was buried in Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery.
  • On 7 September 1877,James William Jull's son, Henry Gilbert Jull was buried in Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery.
  • In 1878 moved from Drayton to the Haden district. They named their property "Arlington". James, who was adept at constructing shingle roofs, built their first house of bark lined with calico. Later another home was constructed on the property.
    Mary Ann was a millner making Cabbage tree hats for the local trade as well as shops such as Cribb & Foote in Ipswich. The children helped plait the leaves while Mary Ann bleached & blocked the hats.
    During the drought the family washing was done in a nearby creek.
  • On 1 November 1892,his wife, Mary Ann White died in Queensland at age 62.

  • James William Jull died on 25 November 1910 in Brisbane, Queensland. "The Brisbane Courier" reported on Wednesday 30 November 1910 :- Old Pensioner's Death
    Lying dead on the floor of his room an old age pensioner, of 76 years, named James William Jull, was found early yesterday by his son-in-law Mr. Clements. It is understood that he was not attended by a doctor, and that he had been a sufferer from indigestion. The police, were informed of the death, and a post-mortem examination was ordered.
  • James was buried on 30 November 1910 in Toowong Cemetery.
  • His estate was probated on 20 November 1911 and advertised in "The Brisbane Courier"- Jull, James William, late of Brisbane, formerly of Toowoomba, farmer, died November 25, 1910, personalty 252 pound. Minnie Jull

  • Minnie Jull was born in 1869 in Queensland.
  • She was the daughter of James William Jull and Mary Ann White.
  • At the age of 31 years, Minnie Jull married Ernest Dearling, son of Thomas Dearling and Mary Ann Lintott, in 1900 in Queensland. Ernest and Minnie settled at Haden. To suppliment their farm income Ernest hauled logs and carried farm produce to Meringandan. He participated on Committees to bring a shool, the railway and a local hall to the community. He was a member of the Rifle, Cricket and Tennis Clubs as well as the Farmer's Union, Mutual Union Lodge, the Progress Association and the Show Society.
  • Minnie Jull and Ernest Dearling appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Djuan. Ernst was a farmer and Minnie carried out home duties.

  • Minnie was buried on 8 February 1961 in Goombungee Cemetery.
  • The following was published in a book celebrating the Haden Centenary “Mr Ernest Dearling landed in Australia from England in 1893, he later settled in Haden. He married Minnie Jull in 1900. They reared a family of three sons and three daughters. He was instrumental in helping to get a school at Haden, also the railway, Church of England and Haden Hall. He was secretary of the Rifle Club, a member of the Cricket and Tennis Clubs; the Farmers Union during its existence; MU Lodge, Progress Association and Goombungee-Haden Show Society. Like other new settlers he suffered many hardships. They had to walk several miles for their mail, meat and butter.
    In the 1902 drought he would leave his brother the late Mr Thomas Dearling digging in the well while he drove the stock seven miles to water. Water was struck in the well just as the drought ended. He was also a teamster for many years and besides hauling log wood carted farm produce to Meringandan before the advent of the Railway in 1910.” Submitted by AM Dearling.
