John's sister Ann and her husband were also on the ship which arrived on 4 August.

  • Laurence Claude Burgess was born on 2 June 1897 in Tasmania.
  • He was the son of Charles Burgess and Louisa Sarah May Butler.
  • Laurence Claude Burgess enlisted in the AIF on 18 May 1915 in Tasmania. His service number was 2217, he was a labourer and listed his next of kin as his father Charles BURGESS of Preston. He had a fair complexion, dark hair and dark eyes, was 5'91/2" tall and weighted 147 pound. He joined the 12th Batallion. He served a Galliopi where he contracted severe gastric. He also served in France where he suffered a gun shot wound in the face and a wound in the leg in 1917. He was transferred to the 2nd Birmaingham Military War Hospital and finally returned home on 12 January 1919.

  • At the age of 32 years, 11 months and 12 days, Martha Jane Burgess married Arthur Benjamin Beer, son of Benjamin Beer and Rhoda Jones, on 18 July 1907 in New South Wales. Arthur was a 37 year old widowed printer's mechanic and lived in Goulburn. His parents were noted as Benjamin Beer and Rhoda Jones (deceased). Martha was 32 years old, lived in Goulburn and was a dressmaker the daugher of Elizabeth Ann Burgess. Witnesses to the marriage were F. W. Beer and Elizabeth Burgess.
  • Martha Jane Burgess died on 7 October 1923 in New South Wales at age 49. Her death certificate stated her cause of death to be a malignant disease of ovary, secondary deposits widespread. At the time of her death her children Harry and Myra were only 14 and 11 years old.
  • She was buried on 9 October 1923 in New South Wales.
  • She's orbituary appeared in the local paper. It read :- "Mrs Martha Beer, wife of Mr A B Beer, of "Aden" Lagoon Street, died shortly before nine o'clock on Sunday night as St John's Hospital after and illness following a serious operation. She leaves a husband and two young children, Harry and Myra. The late Mrs Beer was 49 years of age and was a prominent member of the Salvation Army. Her work for the Women's League being deeply appreciated. She was greatly esteemed by her many friends. The funeral took place this afternoon at the old Methodist Cemetery."

  • Mary Burgess and Samuel Bargery appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 in South Petherton, Somerset. Samuel is shown as a 62 year old workman in a sail cloth factory, born in Crewkerne. Mary, his wife is 51 years old, an invalid born Chiselborough. Their daughter Hannah is a 22 year old leather glover born Chiselborough and son Samuel a 13 year old work boy in the sail cloth factory, also born in Chiselborough. Ann Burgess, his 79 year old widowed mother-in-law, a pauper born Chiselborugh is also living with the family.
  • Her death was recorded with the Somerset, an unknown place Registration District in the June 1876 Quarter . She was aged 66 years.

  • At the age of 20 years, 3 months and 10 days, Mary Ann (Annie) Burgess married Arthur Henry Williams, son of Thomas Williams and Catherine Maddern, on 17 January 1899 in Queensland.
  • Mary Ann (Annie) Burgess and Arthur Henry Williams appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1903 and 1908 living at Thallon Street, Crow's Nest. Arthur was a draper and Mary Ann carried out domestic duties.

  • Mary Ann (Annie) Burgess appeared on the Electoral Roll with Helen Florence Williams and Henry Edward Gordon between 1932 and 1958 in Concord. Martin was a rep. Mary Anne, Helen's mother, lived with them.
