Mrs G Garrett formerly Ma(r)y Jefferis is staying with her mother, her lit(t)le chil(d) (a girl) with her, and a very small one too, or I know nothing of such matters wh. is most likely the case. Mary is still very pretty, very lively, though a little sobered - ergo improved."

  • Heenlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces, service number 348, on 26 October 1914 in Bundaberg. He gave his next of kin as his mother Mrs E A Jefferis and stated he was 36 years 10 months old. He was a shoeing smith and had been an apprentice blacksmith for three years in Bundaberg. He was 5' 81/2" tall, weighted 165 lbs with dark complexion, brown hair and black hair. He was of the COE faith. He joined the 5th Light Horse. He was transferred to the 2nd Lighthorse as a Sergeant on 31 July 1916. He servied in Gallipoli and Egypt. He was discharge in Brisbane on 30 August 1918. Arthur's service record was mistakenly stamped as KIilled in Action. His file was also confused with that of Arthur Tarlton Jefferis making it difficult for Arthur to receive his Victory Medal.
  • He and Emily Ann Bright appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1919 and 1921 living at Electra Street, Bundaberg. Arthur was a blacksmith. Bessie Jefferis also lived with them.
  • On 14 February 1921 Arthur's mother died. Her obituary states Arthur was living in Fairymead Road at the time.
  • On 6 April 1921 Arthur's house was demolished by a cyclone. Both he and his niece Bessie were in the house at the time. An account of the storm was published in the Queenslander Newspaper on 16 April. It read:-

    "BUNDABERG, April 6.
    A cyclonic storm raged throughout the Bundaberg district during the night, and between 3 and 6 o'clock this morning the wind, which has commenced blowing from the south east and gradually veered to the north-east, reached hurricane force. Numerous houses were stripped of roofs and sheets of iron were blown about like sheets of paper. The Federal Hotel, two boarding houses, and the Central Boys' School were practically stripped of their roofs, and several plate glass windows in shops in the main street were smashed. At North Bundaberg a house situated on a high block occupied by Mr. A. Jefferis was blown down owing to the collapse of the posts supporting the building. Three sulkies under the house were smashed, Jefferis had just put his head out of the doorway to look at the windmill, when the tank burst, and the volume of water washed him downstairs. By the time he regained his feet the house had collapsed. Miss Jefferis, who was inside, fortunately escaped uninjured. A girl who was riding a bicycle was blown off it, and was somewhat severely injured about the head and body. Sheds and fences were blown down in all directions. Fortunately the damage to the sugar cane near Bundaberg was only slight. The old cane was, twisted about to some extent by the force of the gale, and some of the younger cane was uprooted, but the benefit from the rain will outweigh the damage by the wind. Other crops, however, and the banana plantations particularly, suffered considerable damage. During the storm upwards of 8 in. of rain was registered, and the river rose to within a foot of the top of the wall. "

  • At the age of 45 years, Arthur Jefferis married Mary Maud Breacher, daughter of Thomas Breacher and Mary Williams, in 1924 in Queensland. There were no children from this marriage.
  • Arthur Jefferis appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1925 living at Electra Street, Bundaberg. Arthur was a blacksmith. By this time he had married but his wife may not have change her address with the Electrol Commission. Bessie carried out home duties.
  • He and Mary Maud Breacher appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1928 living at Electra Street, Bundaberg. Mary was shown as a nurse and Arthur a blacksmith. Bessie was also living with them.
  • Arthur Jefferis and Mary Maud Breacher appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1930 and 1934 living at Electra Street, Bundaberg. Arthur was shown as living in Electra Street while Mary Maud's address was Fairymead Road. Either he hadn't changed his address, or they had separated.
  • Arthur Jefferis and Mary Maud Breacher appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1937 and 1943 living at Fairymead Road, Bundaberg. Arthur's occupation was shown as blacksmith and Mary Maud's as home duties. They appeared to have moved back to the house in Failymead Road.
  • Arthur Jefferis died on 29 June 1944 in Fairymead Road, Bundaberg, Queensland, at age 66.
  • Arthur was buried in Grave A2 P809, Bundaberg Cemetery, Queensland. Arthur's mother Emily is also buried at that site.

Arthur Douglas Eggar Jefferis

M, b. 1 January 1905, d. 10 February 1973
  • Arthur Douglas Eggar Jefferis was born on 1 January 1905 in 13 Lennox Street, Kimberley, South Africa.
  • He was the son of Robert Percy Jefferis and Caroline Jones.
  • Arthur Douglas Eggar Jefferis was baptized on 5 February 1905. One of the sponsors was his maternal uncle, Alfred Jones.
  • Some time after Arthur's birth, his mother left Robert Percy in South Africa and travelled with the two children to England, according to family hearsay, for her or Ivy's health. In England the family stayed with Robert Percy's family. Caroline remained in contact with Percy and returned to South Africa with the children for a while until 1914. On their return both Ivy and her mother worked in munitions factories.
  • At the age of 26 years, 5 months and 24 days, Arthur Douglas Eggar Jefferis married Winnifred Phylis Lee on 25 June 1931. The marriage was registered in the Brentford District in the June 1931 Quarter. She was 19 years old and living at 152 Valetta Road in Acton. Arthur was living at 99 Speldhurst Road in Bedford Park and was a radio and motor engineer.
  • Arthur Douglas Eggar Jefferis enlisted in the Military on 3 June 1942. He had a heart murmer which prevented him from going into service but he served in the home guard until 31 December 1944. He worked as a tool room fitter and turner for His Magesty's Underwater Weapons Launching Establishment in Bournemouth (West Howe) from 16 April1942 until 8 Sep 1945.
  • He was ill with diverticulitis and also suffered from a twisted bowel which required a colostomy. He had suffered from disgestive problems for a long time and was a vegetarian. He wrote to his mother from Canada to say his "indigestion is not cured yet quite. I really live on milk here. We take 3/4 gallon a day every day. In spite of fairly hard work have put on weight."
  • He and Winnifred Phylis Lee immigrated to Canada on 23 January 1948. They flew via Trans-Canada Airlines since it had the shortest waiting list and Ian was sick with pneumonia. Arthur was listed as a fitter and turner on his passport.
  • Arthur Douglas Eggar Jefferis and Winnifred Phylis Lee lived in 53 Delmar Avenue, Toronto. They rented a bungalow with the land lord occupying a bedroom and a kitchen. The bungalow was three miles from Islington on the Humber River. Arthur's first job was only a few minutes walk from his home at Dayton Rubber Company as a maintenance mechanic at $1 per hour.
  • In 1967 he was real estate agent for Roy Burton Real Estate.
  • ArthurJefferis and his son-in-law Edward O'Brien formed Auto-By-Auction at 163 Yrok Street, Toronto (Auto and General Austioneers, Valuators). Arthur also worked for Acme at the time.
  • Arthur Douglas Eggar Jefferis died on 10 February 1973 at age 68. He died of emphysema from smoking.

  • Bessie Jefferis appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Crofton Street, Bundaberg. She lived with her grandmother Emily, and aunt and uncle Annie and Arthur, a horse driver.
  • She appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1908 living at Crofton Street, Bundaberg. She was living with her aunt Anne, a store keeper and her grandmother Emily. Both Emily and Bessie carried out home duties. Arthur lived in Branyan Street and worked as a blacksmith.
  • She appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1919 living at Electra Street, Bundaberg. She carried out domestic duties and lived with her grandmother Emily and uncle Arthur.
  • On 6 April 1921 Arthur's house was demolished by a cyclone. Both he and his niece Bessie were in the house at the time. An account of the storm was published in the Queenslander Newspaper on 16 April. It read:-

    "BUNDABERG, April 6.
    A cyclonic storm raged throughout the Bundaberg district during the night, and between 3 and 6 o'clock this morning the wind, which has commenced blowing from the south east and gradually veered to the north-east, reached hurricane force. Numerous houses were stripped of roofs and sheets of iron were blown about like sheets of paper. The Federal Hotel, two boarding houses, and the Central Boys' School were practically stripped of their roofs, and several plate glass windows in shops in the main street were smashed. At North Bundaberg a house situated on a high block occupied by Mr. A. Jefferis was blown down owing to the collapse of the posts supporting the building. Three sulkies under the house were smashed, Jefferis had just put his head out of the doorway to look at the windmill, when the tank burst, and the volume of water washed him downstairs. By the time he regained his feet the house had collapsed. Miss Jefferis, who was inside, fortunately escaped uninjured. A girl who was riding a bicycle was blown off it, and was somewhat severely injured about the head and body. Sheds and fences were blown down in all directions. Fortunately the damage to the sugar cane near Bundaberg was only slight. The old cane was, twisted about to some extent by the force of the gale, and some of the younger cane was uprooted, but the benefit from the rain will outweigh the damage by the wind. Other crops, however, and the banana plantations particularly, suffered considerable damage. During the storm upwards of 8 in. of rain was registered, and the river rose to within a foot of the top of the wall. "

  • She appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1937 living at Crofton Street, Bundaberg. Her occupation was shown as 'attendant.'
  • Bessie Jefferis died on 22 December 1942 in Biggenden, Queensland, at age 60.
  • Bessie was buried in Degilbo, Queensland.
