  • From History of Cossart and Allied Families - "Thomas Cossart was a property holder and a member of Rouen's "Bourgeoisie". He was a very wealthy man and with his two sons Thomas and Jehan, was interested in dyes and their use in dying cloth and yarns. He purchased Seigneurie de Franqueville for his older son, Thomas, and for the younger, Jehan, the Seigneurie de Broschestre. However, the brothers did not seek ennoblement, in fact Thomas refused to pay "franc-fief", the tax levied on the noble owner of a feudal estate, on the ground that he did not belong to the nobility and was exempted because of rights and privileges as "Bourgeois". The Cossart brothers were born Catholics but Thomas junior abandoned the Catholic Church and joined the Huguenot party, while Jehan, adhered to the religion of his father throughout his life. At the time of the Reformation the Cossarts of Rouen were divided in their Religious opinions. Those of the name who forsook the Catholic Church, as well as their descendants, held fast to the Reformed faith with the utmost zeal and courage until the Revocation at which time every Cossart who belonged to the Huguenot Church (except Isaac Cossart, Third (who was murdered ) left France and sought asylum in foreign parts."
