Mary Stuart1,2

F, b. 8 June 1804, d. 23 December 1877
  • Mary Stuart was born on 8 June 1804 in Kingussie and Insch, Inverness, Scotland.3
  • She was the daughter of Donald Stuart and Janet McEdward.
  • Mary Stuart was baptized on 10 June 1804 in Kingussie and Insch, Inverness, Scotland.4
  • At the age of 23 years, 8 months and 13 days, Mary Stuart married Evan McPherson on 21 February 1828 in Kingussie and Insch, Inverness, Scotland. After the death of McPherson, Mary married William McGregor. They immigrated to Australia in 1838 leaving two of her children by her Marriage to Ewen McPherson with their grandmother.5
  • Mary Stuart was widowed circa 1833 when died Evan McPherson died. He died before their third child Ewan was born.
  • Between 1833 and 1837 Mary Stuart lived in Inverdruie, Inverness.6
  • At the age of 33 years, 5 months and 22 days, Mary Stuart married William McGregor, son of Gregor McGregor and Christiana Clarke, on 30 November 1837 in Kingussie, Inverness, Scotland.7
  • Before 1838,her daughter, Janet McPherson died. Another daughter Jess (Janet) was born to Mary in 1838. 'When Mary died George her son, stated that two daughters by her first marriage were deceased.8
  • Mary Stuart immigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on 15 November 1838. Departed from Orban, Scotland on 4 July 1838 on the St George with William and two daughters, Louisa McPherson and Janet McGregor. The immigration record showed Mary's calling as "servant of all work". She was the daugther of Donald Stewart a farmer of the Parish of Insch and his wife Janet. Mary's age on Embarkation was "30 years in August 1838" (which is incorrect). Her religion was Presbyterian and she could read and write. Mary's two younger brothers George and Donald were with them on the voyage. What a heart wrenching time this must have been for Mary who was forced to leave behind at least one of her children, Ewan McPherson, with her parents - see William's story for information on departure.9
  • In 1844,her daughter, Jess (Janet) McGregor died in New South Wales. Her death certificate shows her as Jesse Macgregor. Jess is pet name for Janet. The only other information given was that she was an infant. It seems likely that this is the correct Jesse as her mothers death certificate shows one daughter by second marriage deceased.10,8
  • On 24 April 1863,their son, Donald McGregor died in Nelsons Plains, New South Wales, Australia. When he was accidentally shot. He was a farm labourer and dairy man at the time of his death. According to family hearsay he returned from Duck Shooting with a party of lads. As he was getting out of the boat one boy, not knowing the gun was loaded, pretended to shoot Donald. Donald died from the wounds, he was 19 years old. An inquest was held by William Edward Shaw Coroner on the 25 April 1863, verdict accidental gunshot wound. The gun discharged while he was getting through a fence according to another family story.11,12,13
  • Mary Stuart died on 23 December 1877 in Holsworthy, New South Wales, Australia, at age 73. Her death was caused by "decay of nature, had been ailing some time - the coroner did not deem it necessary to hold an inquest.". She was shown as 74 years old. Her father was given as John Stewart, cattle dealer, mother unknown. The informant was George McGregor her son of Holsworthy. George gave Scotland as her place of birth and stated she had been in the Colony 30 years. Her first marriage was to a McPherson, the second to a McGregor. One son alive, two daughters dead by first marriage, two sons and two daughters alive by second, and one son and one daughter dead by second. Her death notice appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald on 3 January 1878. It read: "McGREGOR. —December 23, at her late residence, Holsworthy, Mary, the dearly regretted wife of William McGregor, in her 74th year, for many years a resident of Nelson's Plains, Hunter River"

Just what happened to William is a mystery. George was listed as the informant on his mother's death certificate. William is not listed as living or deceased but Mary's death notice indicates he may still have been alive. There is no death registration for him. One possibility is that he later remarried and lived in Maitland. However, where the age matches that of William the other details don't. The 1872 Grenville's Post Office Directory shows a William McGregor of Bringelly and a William McGregor of Maitland suggesting there were two.14,15
  • She was buried on 24 December 1877 in Liverpool Cemetery, Sydney. Presbyterian Section.8

Jannusch, Haden) and Miss Elsie Christina Suhr (second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Suhr, Bergen) by Pastor Poland. The church had been tastefully decorated by girl friends of the bride, and the chief feature was a large wedding bell filled with confetti, and made by Mrs. A. .Schilf (Haden). During the signing of the register a vocal solo was rendered by Mrs. D. Stark, Messrs. G. Jannusch and D. Keenan. Mrs. D. The sleeves were finished with small hand-made roses. She wore a veil in mob cap style, with a posy of orange blossom at either side. She carried a large sheaf of lilies tied with white satin streamers, and also wore a gold wristlet watch, the gift of the bridegroom. The chief bridesmaid, Miss Ruby Suhr (sister of the bride), and her second bridesmaid Miss Belle Jannusch (sister of the bridegroom), were frocked in apricot crepe de Chine, trimmed with feathers and cadochons, and finished with large bows at the right sides. On the left shoulders were rosettes of silver tissue and feather, from which white suspended streamers of the same material as the frocks. They wore black "Nelly Kelly'' hats and carried bouquets of deep cream stocks veiled in asparagus
plumosus, tied with cream streamers. The bride's mother wore a beaded black Marocain costume, with a hat to match. The bridegroom's mother wore black silk Marocain, trimmed with hand-sewn beads, and also a hat to tone. Mr. W. Jannusch (brother of the bridegroom) acted as best man, and Mr. C. Suhr (brother of the bride) carried out his duties of groomsman. At the conclusion of the ceremony the guests drove to the home of the bride's parents, where about 150 persons were entertained at the breakfast, which was served in a large marquee at the side of the house. A wedding cake adorned the centre of the chief table. Dancing took place at night. The bride and bridegroom left subsequently for Coolangatta, where the honeymoon is being spent. The bride wore a travelling costume of navy gabardine, made with a pleated tunic, with collar and cuffs finished with fur trimmings. Her black hat was relieved with ornamental trimmings. The bride's present to the bridegroom was a pair of xylonite military brushes in a case, and the bridegroom's present to each of the bridesmaids was a gold armlet."2,3

  • Elsie Christina Suhr was born in 1901 in Queensland.1
  • She was the daughter of Wilhelm Heinrick Suhr and Wilhelmine Utschink.1
  • At the age of 24 years, Elsie Christina Suhr married Herman Jannusch, son of Herman August Jannusch and Augusta Schilf, on 5 August 1925 in Bergen Lutheran Church, Queensland. The Brisbane Courier reported:- "At the Bergen Lutheran Church, in the Crow's Nest district, on August 5, the marriage was solemnised of Mr. Herman Jannusch (second son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Keenan. Mrs. D. Stalk presided at the organ, and violin accompaniments were given by Mr. A Schilf. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of cream satin de sole and lace, made with a shirred feather fringed panel at the left side, and a cabochon finished with tiny pearls at the right side.
