Martin Rohde1

  • Martin Rohde was born on 8 November 1860 in Walcz, Poland.1,2,3
  • He was the son of Christoph Rohde and Johanna Zannot.4
  • Martin Rohde immigrated on 5 November 1870 to Queensland with Christoph Rohde and Johanna Zannot. Christop aged 42, Johanna 44, Julius 8, and Martin 11 travelled on the Humboldt which salied from Hamburg on 16 Jul 1870.2
  • At the age of 21 years, 5 months and 11 days, Martin Rohde married Helene (Lena) Vohland, daughter of Conrad Vohland and Anna Magdaline (Lena) Ludde, on 19 April 1882 in Crosshill, Queensland. The marriage took place at Lena's parents residence. Their first five children were born at Crosshill (west of Toowoomba and south of Oakey.)1,5,3
  • Martin Rohde and Helene (Lena) Vohland moved to Emu Creek in 1888.Martin and his brother Julius had found work on Emu Creek Station. When the areas was opened up for selection in the early 1890's Julius and Martin took up selections. Martin's block was Portion 8, Parish of Djuan, an area of 76 acres. Four more children were born at Emu Creek.6
  • The following article appeared in the Darling Downs Gazette on 11 April 1891. published a list of new voters for the Aubigny Electorate. Both Martin and Christoph stated they lived at Emu Creek, Djuan.7

  • On 27 March 1901,Martin Rohde's mother, Johanna Zannot died in Emu Creek, Crow's Nest, Queensland.9,10
  • Martin Rohde and Helene (Lena) Vohland moved to Kulpi around between 1902 and 1903.Martin leased Portion 167V, Parish of Rosalie for 25. It consisted of 160 acres, a house and other improvements. It had been owned by his father Christipher. He had to do battle with the prickly pear.9
  • Martin Rohde and Helene (Lena) Vohland appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1903 living at Emu Creek, although by this time they most like had moved to Evergreen. Martin was a labourer and Helene carried out domestic duties. Martin's father Christopher was a labourer on Emu Creek station or perhaps on Martin's property.11
  • In 1903,Martin Rohde's son, Edward Albert Wilhelm Rohde was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.9
  • In November 1905 Martin and Helene appeared to be in financial difficulties. The following article appeared in "The Brisbane Courier" on 18 November 1905 - "The International Harvester Company chimed from Martin Rohde £30 6s. 2d., for promissory notes stated to be due on machinery obtained. Mr. O'Rourke (instructed by Messrs. Eden and Groom) appeared for the company, and Mr. R. Dodd for the defendant. Judgement was given for the plaintiff for £21 10s., with costs. In the case G. D. Abond v. M. Rohde and Helene Rohde, for rent alleged to be due under agreement, Messrs. Eden and Groom appeared for the plaintiff, and Messrs. King and Rutledge for the defendant. The case was by agreement adjourned to the next sittings of the court. "
    In 1907 his land was re-proclaimed for selection in 1907 because Martin was unable to pay the rent.
    Meanwhile Helena had purchased a home in Cherry Street, Oakey from her father's estate of which she was also a beneficiary. Their daugher Ernestine was married from the residence on 21 February 1906. After the birth of her last child in December of that year, Helena, who had gained her midwifery certificate, turned the home into a Maternity Nursing Home. Martin, in the meantime spent time shearing sheep but not contributing to the family's finances in a major way.12,9
  • Martin Rohde appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1916 living at Cherry Street, Oakey. He was a labourer.13
  • Martin Rohde died on 13 December 1924 in Queensland at age 64. He and Lena had lived separate lives for a number of years.4,14

  • At the time of the Golden Wedding celebration in Oakey of Mary (Martha) Rohde's parents Julius Rohde and Mathilde Elizabeth Bertha Dornbusch on 10 June 1933, she was living in South Africa. The Queenslander reported: - Julius and Mathilda celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. The following article appeared in "The Queenslander" on 6 July 1933. "In honour of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Rohde, Oakey, who celebrated their golden wedding on June 10, the members of their family and a large number of friends assembled at their home, and entertained them at a special evening. Dancing, cards, and games were enjoyed, and supper was served on the verandas, which were decorated with coloured streamers and Japanese lanterns. The table decorations were carried out in blue and gold. The wedding cake was made by their daughter Mrs. Holllngsworth (Sydney). Mr. Joseph Ditto presided, and proposed the health of the guests of honour. Mr. Julius Rohde suitably responded. Before her marriage Mrs. Rohde was Miss Matilda Dornbusch, of Aubigny. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Rohde for many years resided at Aubigny and Emu Creek, and during the past 26 years have resided in Oakey. The family consists of eight daughters. Mes dames Edward Hess (Maclagan), William Lockwood (Sydney), Leslie Skelton (Coolangatta), Robert Hollingworth (Sydney), Herbert Simons (South Africa), Herbert Delgnan (Surat), William Cleaver (Cape Cleveland Light House), and Miss Edith Rohde (Sydney). There are twenty-three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren."4
