Emily Staff

F, b. 25 March 1852, d. 22 November 1900
  • Emily Staff was born on 25 March 1852 in Sydney.1
  • She was the daughter of James Samuel Staff and Mary Ann Chaplin.
  • At the age of 29 years, Emily Staff married Samuel Staines, son of Samuel Staines and Eliza Sydie, in 1882 in Tenterfield, New South Wales, Australia. Ambrose Crawford rode his bike from Teven to Tenterfield to attend the wedding. He took the train back next day.2,3
  • From the book "The Staffs in Australia" - Emily Staff went with her brothers to the Richmond River in 1882 and that year married Samuel Staines. He owned a sugar mill, a fairly substantial structure, built by Sam and his brother at Youngman's Creek, and soon to give Rous Mill its name. Emily and Sam had a son, Samuel Everett Staines, in 1884, but tragically the father died suddenly when the baby was only four weeks old. The mill had to be sold (a company operating it until 1892) and Emily returned to live with her parents in Granville and Parramatta and later in a small cottage net to their large house in Prospect Street, Harris Park.
In 1895 Emily was married to John Holland and bore him a son, Dudley Holland. However, she survived only until 1900, when she died at the age of forty-eight. Dudley lived to serve in two World Wars.
Young Samuel Everett Staines became a ship's engineer, voyaging overseas. He married a Tenterfield nurse called "Trish" in 1905, and they had a daughter Coral. Later they travelled to America, where it seem they settled permanently.4
    "
  • On 1 April 1884,her husband, Samuel Staines died in Granville, New South Wales, Australia, at age 37. He died at the home of his father-in-law James Staff.
After the death of Samuel senior (who died about one month after the birth of Samuel Everett) Emily returned to live with her mother in Sydney. She married John Holland on 13 February 1895.5,6
  • On 1 May 1889 George Towner wrote in his dairy:- "Wednesday.......went to Parramatta again to see Grandmother. Stayed with her until the afternoon, then went to Graville to Mrs James Staff's place. was made very welcome. Went to Paramatta with Mrs Staines and her two sisters to the Lodge. Stayed at Staff's all night and had a pleasant time of it..7
  • On 2 May 1889 he wrote:- "Thursday .... went with Mrs Staines and Bertha to Parramatta to have a look around. Went in the new Wesleyan Church, also the Church of England, and the to the RC church and heard Bishop Moran install a Priest to the Charge of Parramatta. Got back to Staff's to dinner when I started to walk to Auburn to Will's. Got there - no one home. Saw Ruth and then took the train to Sydney."8
  • At the age of 42 years, 10 months and 19 days, Emily Staff married John Holland on 13 February 1895 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.9,4
