Maurice Collins

M, b. 1868, d. 8 January 1953
  • Maurice Collins was born in 1868 in Highfields.
  • He was the son of Cornelius Collins and Margaret Collins.
  • With his father and brothers Danial and John, Maurice was contracted to carry out road works on the North Road between Toowoomba and Merritt's Creek for the Highfields Divisional Board. John and Daniel also carried out construction work on the roads from Crow's Nest to Djuan. They built a heavy bridge over Perseverance Creek in 1891.
    Around 1893 Maurice had a butchering business, supplying locals as well as carrying meat to Bergen. Some of the surviving records from this business show he paid £2/10/- for a 752 pound bullock, £2/-/- for a 530 pound cow. The price for a 7 pound roast was 1/2; 25 lbs of salted meat 4/2 and 5 lbs of steak 1/-.
  • At the age of 27 years, Maurice Collins married Johanna Leahy, daughter of David Leahy and Margaret Leane, on 20 February 1895 in Queensland. Maurice and Johanna operated a small storeon his property. Their mail came from Crow's Nest. Maurice built the first general store in Haden for Mr McCollum in 1912. In 1920 Maurice took over the store.

  • On 7 May 1924,his wife, Johanna Leahy died in Queensland at age 55. After her death Maurice retired to Haden in 1925.
  • Maurice Collins and Kathleen Collins appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1925 living at Haden. Maurice was a storekeeper and his daughter Kathleen a shop assistant. Daughter Mary Ellen carried out home duties.

Maurice Hugh Collins

  • Maurice Hugh Collins was born in 1897 in Queensland.
  • He was the son of Cornelius Collins and Ellen Bridget Nolan.
  • Maurice Hugh Collins enlisted in the Military on 25 September 1915. His regimental number was 3796, he was a Roman Catholic,
    his occupation a Fruit hawker. He lived at Rockburn Terrace, Paddington, Brisbane, Queensland at his parents home. He was single and aged 18 years. His next of kin was listed as his father Cornelius Collins of Rockburn Terrace, Paddington, Brisbane, Queensland. His previous military service was with the 7th Infantry as a cadet for 4 years. Maurice enlisted on 25 September 1915 as a Private with the 25th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement. His AWM Embarkation Roll number was 23/42/3 and his unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT Wandilla on 31 January 1916. He went missing in action on 5 September 1916 and after a court of inquiry on 31 July 1917 was deemed killed in action. He body was located in 1930 and Maurice was re- buried in Serre Road Cemetery No. 2 (Plot XXV, Row H, Grave No. 12), France. Panel number, Roll of Honour,Australian War Memorial     147.
    Other details War service: Western Front. His Medals the British War Medal and the Victory Medal went to his father in 1923, although his dog tags were only sent to his father when his body reburied in 1930.
