Anna Catherina Heim1

F, b. 8 March 1875, d. 11 September 1936

Anna Catherina Priebe (nee Heim), formerly Thun (1875-1936). Photo - Jenny
  • Anna Catherina Heim was born on 8 March 1875 in Frankfurt am Mien, Germany. She was the daughter of Johann Conrad Heim and Anna Gebroken.1,2,3
  • At the age of 28 years, 5 months and 26 days, Anna Catherina Heim married Pastor Julius Frederick Thun on 3 September 1903 in Toowoomba, Queensland. Her surname was spelt Kothe. She had previously been married to Heinrich Kothe in Germany. He died from food poisoning on the trip to Australia. Julius Thun, a Lutheran Pastor conducted the burial. After arriving in Australia, Anna continued on to her husband's relatives. However, she retured to Douglas and married Julius.4,5,6,7
  • On 19 July 1909,her husband, Pastor Julius Frederick Thun died in Queensland at age 30. He died when he contracted blood poisoning when a splinter in his hand from the sulky turned septic.8,2
  • At the age of 34 years, 9 months and 27 days, Anna Catherina Heim married Carl August Friedrich Priebe, son of Johann David Christlieb (Carl) Priebe, on 4 January 1910 in Toowoomba, Queensland. According to hearsay, the local community had a problem with Catherine and her children living in the manse. Until she left the community could not attract another minister. So at a church meeting Carl Priebe said he would offer to marry her and then she and her children could come and lived with him and his children. Catherine accepted.1,6,7
  • In October 1913,her husband, Carl August Friedrich Priebe died in Naples, Italy, at age 43. Catherine and Carl had returned to Germany with their daughter Alvera to bring back money. Catherine was from a wealthy family. On the return journey, Carl fell ill and was hospitalised in Naples where he died. The glass negatives of Carl lying in the funeral parlour in Naples are held by a descendant in Toowoomba. They had to be forwarded to our authorities as proof of death.6,7
  • On 13 October 1914 The Brisbane Courier reported:-
" A will, executed under somewhat unusual circumstance, came under the notice of his Honour Mr. Justice Chubb, in Chambers, yesterday. A farmer named Carl Priebe, who resided at Bergen, near Toowoomba, while on a trip to Europe, was taken ill at Naples, and entered the German Hospital there. He died in the institution in October, 1913. His will was drawn by the British Vice-Consul, and was witnessed by two of the nurses. After his death it was forwarded to his widow, who resides at Bergen. On being lodged at the Supreme Court Registry for probate purposes a question arose as to whether it had been properly attested, and the matter was referred to his Honour. The attestation clause did not state that the attesting witnesses had signed the will in the presence of the testator but its execution was attested by the Vice-Consul. Mr. Macleod (instructed by Measra. Feez, Ruthning, and Baynes) applied fo rprobate to he granted to Mrs. Catherine Priebe; notwithstanding the apparent defect in the attestation clause, resting his application on the attestation by the British Vice-Consul, and the impracticability of obtaining the evidence of the attesting witnesses. His Honour decided to take official notice of the signature and seal of the Vice-Consul, and holding that the will had apparently been executed according to law, ordered probate to issue to the widow, "subject to
