  • At the age of 20 years, Myrtle Merchant married Keith Werner, son of Hermann Robert Emil Werner and Jean Mann, in October 1932 in New South Wales. The wedding was reported in The Land newspaper :- " Werner-Merchant. - Clusters of lovely flowers decorated St. Andrew's Church, Inverell, for the wedding of Miss Myrtle Merchant, eldest daughter of Mrs. P. Carroll, of Warwick, Queensland, and Mr. Keith Werner, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Werner, of Ross Hill.
    The bride wore a lovely hand-embroidered veil with her long gown of ivory satin, and carried an armful of arum lilies. Miss Dossie Jaggers, in a dainty frock of pink georgette with trimmings of black velvet, attended the bride.
    Wearing long gowns of pale pink georgette with bandeaux of tulle and field daisies, little Misses Thelma and Iris Carroll acted as flower girls.
    Mr. Charles Werner was the best man.
    After the ceremony, Mrs. Carroll, in a smart frock of navy crepe-de-chene with trim mings of white, and Mrs. Jaggers, sister of the bridegroom, who chose a frock of black moracain, received the guests at the reception."
  • Myrtle Merchant and Keith Werner appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1936 living at George Street, Inverell. Keith was an ironmonger and Phyllis carried out domestic duties. Keith's father Robert lived with them.
  • Myrtle Merchant was listed as the next of kin of Keith Werner when he enlisted in the Australian Army on 24 June 1942 in Paddington. His service number was NX96908 and he was living in Canberra at the time of his enlistment. He gave his wife Myrtle as his next of kin. He was discharged on 28 July 1944 with the rank of Gunner in the ARTY RFTS NGF.

She was born in Halifax and lived in Halifax. Raymond was a 23 year old waiter born and living in Truro. His parents were Arthur (an Engineer) and Loronia PURDY. Witnesses to the marriage were G W Merlin and Mary E Merlin (Blanche's sister.)

  • Alfred William Merritt was of the Primitive Methodist faith.
  • On 24 May 1879 Alfred Merritt was the chairman a morning tea held at Albert Mills to farewell Rev R A Bailey of the Primitive Methodist Church. Messers Stone, Case, Cossart and Bailey all spoke. Edward Pechey was unable to attend. Rev Bailey gave his final sermon at the Crow's Nest Court House the following day.
  • In 1880 Alfred was the first secretary of the Highfields Shire Council.
  • He. On 10 Nov 1880, a fund raising event was held for the ensuing the newly built Perseverence Primitive Methodist Church, which cost £41, excluding gratuitous labour, was opened free of debt. Joseph Cossart acted as steward for the meeting which was chaired by Rev Thomas Thatcher, and attended by Mr Munro, Mr Littleton, Mr Mitchell, Mr Stone, and Mr Merritt. A special thanks went to William Gunter.
  • In January 1889 Alf Merritt resigned from the Merritt Creek State School committe. His position was filled by G (?)Buzzacott.
  • Alfred William Merritt died on 22 January 1902 in Queensland. The Brisbane Courier reported:- " The funeral of the late Mr. A. W. Merritt, town clerk of Toowoomba, who died suddenly yesterday, took place this afternoon, and was very largely attended. The Mayor (Alderman C. Rowbotham), all the aldermen, including those just elected, and many past aldermen, were present ; also a large number of prominent citizens, the employees of the corporation, and others, The municipal offices heree were closed during the day, and all the business places along the line of the funeral procession closed their doors as a token of respect to the deceased gentleman. The services at the grave were performed by the Revs. J. G. Martin and R. H. Blaimiers, Wesleyan ministers, of the Toowoomba circuit, of which the deceased was a prominent member. Numerous wreaths and flowers were laid on the coffin."
  • He was buried on 23 January 1902 in Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery. PUB2-1R3-0011.
