    Messrs. McColim and Co Ltd... was yesterday made the recipient of two presentations. On behalf of his fellow-employees, Mr W. Utschink presented him with a gold fountain pen suitably inscribed, while his employers presented him with a cheque, and also intimated that his position would be kept open for him on his return." Darling Downs Gazette.
  • John (Arthur) Tomlinson enlisted in the AIF on 2 August 1915. He joined the 2nd Lighthorse Field Ambulance (service number 1701) at the same time as his friend Walter Askin. He was born in Uppingham, England and gave his next of kin as his mother Catherine of High Street, Uppingham, England. He was a groceryman. He served in the Middle East.
  • The following article appeared in the The Brisbane Courier on 6 January 1920. "“Two returned soldiers, Arthur Tomlinson and Walter Askin, of this district [Crow’s Nest], who recently started a storekeeping business at Kumbia, met with a serious motor cycle accident near that place. While travelling on their machine, with the side car attached carrying a third pas-senger, they ran into an obstacle and smashed the machine. Tomlinson had his collar bone broken, and was badly bruised, and Askin sustained damage to his face and neck. The occupant of the side car sustained a broken elbow, and all were unconscious when found. They were removed to the Kingaroy hospital, where they are progressing favourably."

  • Jane Ellen Tonks was also known as Ellen. Her surname on the birth register for at least four of her children was given as THOMAS.
  • She was born on 27 February 1859 in Coaltip Bank, Shropshire, England.
  • She was the daughter of Thomas Tonks and Edith Unknown.
  • At the age of 16 years, 11 months and 11 days, Jane Ellen Tonks married Joseph Kingston, son of James Kingston and Sarah Henson, on 7 February 1876 in Walsall Wood, Staffordshire, England. When they were first married Joseph and Ellen lived in Lichfield Road Walsall, they later moved to "Oakley Cottage" Browshills Road, Walsall Wood. Joseph worked underground in a coal mine owned by Captain Harrison.
  • Jane Ellen Tonks and Joseph Kingston immigrated on 16 December 1878. Joseph and Ellen arrived in Townsville on the "Scottish Prince" after departing from the East India docks in London on 6 September 1878. His sister Sarah Ann was on the same ship and also left the ship in Townsville. Their daughter Edith was with them. Their second daughter was still born on the ship, after Ellen had suffered a fall. Joseph kept a diary of their journey.
  • Joseph and Ellen lived in Townsville for a few years where he set up a successful Drapery Store. They decided to move south to Bundaberg because of Jane's health.
  • In 1903 the Isis scrub was opened up for settlement and Joseph, who had been running a successful store in Bundaberg, and his family moved to Childers. He set up a partnership with his son-in-law Bertie Crow and son John (Jack) in The Crow & Kingston Grocery and Drapery Store in Childers. They ran this store for about 30 years. Around 1925, the business was taken over by two of his grandsons John (Jack) and William (Bill) who changed the name to Kingston and Kingston.
  • Jane Ellen Tonks died on 5 May 1924 in Crescent Street, Childers, at age 65. She died following a stroke.
  • Jane was buried in Apple Tree Creek, Queensland. Headstone Reads: Jane Ellen beloved with of Joseph Kingston 5 May 1924 Aged 65. Jospeh Kingston Died 1946 Aged 92.
