• Henry Walter Smallbone commenced school at Pinelands State School on 30 April 1906.
• He enlisted in the AIF on 31 August 1915 in Toowoomba . His gave his next of kin as his father Henry, a farmer of Pinelands. Henry Walter was also a farmer. He was 5' 81/2" tall with fair hair, blue eyes and light brown hair.
• Henry Walter Smallbone died on 15 November 1915 in General Hospital, Brisbane, Queensland, from cerebal-spinal meningitis.
  
• Henry was buried on 18 November 1915 in Crow's Nest Cemetery. An account of the funeral appeared in "The Brisbane Courier" on the 19 November 1915:- A SOLDIER'S FUNERAL. CROWS NEST, November l8 The funeral of Private Henry Walter Smallbone, A.I.F., who died from meningitis in the Brisbane Hospital, took place at Crow's Nest to-day. A short service was conducted by the Rev. Alf. Mills in the Methodist Church, the building being crowded. The cortege, which was one of the largest seen in the district, was headed by a company of recruits and rifle club members. Representatives of the Crow's Nest Shire Council and the local Patriotic Committee were present, and also leading citizens. Privates J. F. and T. Patch, N. Watson, and Peter White, camp comrades of the deceased, marched with the hearse, and carried the coffin to the grave. The coffin was draped with the Union Jack, and surmounted with floral wreaths from the Patriotic Committee, the Shire Council, the Methodist Church, and many sympathisers. The service at the graveside was very impressive.
  
• On 27 November 1915 a memorial service was held for Henry in the Plainby Methodist Church. "The Brisbane Courier" reported:- MEMORIAL SERVICE. CROW'S NEST, December 1.
  A service In memory of the late Private Henry Walter Smallbone, A.I.F., was conducted last Sunday morning by tho Rev. Alf. A. Mills, In the Plainby Methodist Church, of which the deceased soldier was a member. The pulpit was draped with black, surmounted by the Union Jack. The service was simple but Impressive, and the preacher's remarks were based upon 2 Tim. iv. 7, "I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course." A large congregation was present, Including Messrs. R. J. McCollim , F. C. Jefferson, J. M'Kee, and Ray White, who represented tho Crow's Nest Patriotic Committee.

• Lawrence Smallbone was granted a Certificate by the Land Courts on 17 February 1883 for the 72 acreas of land he had selected at Walloon. He grew lucerne and oaten chaff, all of which he displayed at the Ipswich Show in 1886, winning third prize for his lucerne chaff, second for his panicum chaff and third for his mixed chaff.
  He was also a lay preacher conducting services at Emu Creek, Anduramba and other churches in the Crow's Nest District.

• On 9 August 1913,his wife, Emma Hurford died in Toowoomba, Queensland. She had suffered a haemorrhage of the brain three days earlier.

• On 1 September 1933 an article appeared in "The Courier Mail" regarding the arrest of a Norman Smalley. It read:- GAMING CHARGE - RELIEF WORKER FINED Following complaints to the police of illegal betting at Cannon Hill, a man was arrested on August 30, and ap- peared in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. W. E. H. Ferguson, P.M. Norman Smalley (34), labourer, pleaded guilty to a charge that, on August 30, at Cannon Hill, he had in his possession instruments of gaming. Sergeant J. Smith, who prosecuted, said that when the police arrived at Cannon Hill the defendant tried to get away, but was captured. Defen- dant, ho said, was a relief worker. He was fined £10, in default two months' imprisonment. On a similar charge Edward O'Sul- livan (27), butcher, pleaded not guilty, and was remanded until September 7. Terence Chilton (23), labourer, who was charged with having had an in- strument of gaming in his possession on August 30 at Cribb Island, pleaded not guilty, and was remanded until September 7.

He was discharged on 2 May 1940 as a Private in the 1st Garrison Battalion. He then rejoined the Army on 2 March 1943 (QX49249) in Toowoomba where he was living at the time. He was discharged with the rank od Warrant Officer Class 2 with the Head Quarters FAA.
  
• At the age of 43 years, 4 months and 12 days, Norman Smalley married Ethel Beatrice Cossart, daughter of George Cossart and Minnie Maria Shaw, on 14 November 1942 in St Stephen's Presbyterian Church, Toowoomba. Their marriage was repoerted in "The Courier Mail" on 17 November 1942 - SMALLEY— COSSART — Members of the Toowoomba General Hospital nursing, staff (of which the bride has been matron for two years), and members of the Voluntary Defence Corps formed a guard of honour at the wedding of Miss Ethel B. Cossart (Toowoomba) and Warrant officer Norman Smalley (Brisbane) at St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church, Toowoomba, on November 14. With her blue street frock, the bride wore a navy picture hat. Mrs. H. Chapman was matron of honour for her sister, and Warrant-officer J. Goodrich was best man.
