The Telegraph reported " Evidence that a man whom he had found lying at the side of the Hampton-Ravensbourne Road near a damaged truck on the afternoon of December 27, 1938, had asked to be dragged into the shade and allowed to die in peace was given by Roland James Dunn in the Coroner's Court today when an inquest was held by Mr. J. E. Landy. P.M.. on James Martin Grehan, whose death occurred in the Toowoomba General Hospital on December 28, 1938, as a result of injuries which he received in a motor accident the previous day.
Senior Sergeant W. Quinlan examined the witnesses. Witness stated that at about 3.30 p.m. on December 27 he was driving in a car along the Hampton-Ravensbourne Road. He discovered an injured person whom he now knew was James Grehan. The man was lying in the gutter at the side of the road about five yards past a guide-post. A man who was with witness at the time went to a store nearby to communicate with the ambulance. The injured man when spoken to said, "Drag me into the shade and let me die in peace." There was a truck nearby and from what witness saw he considered that the deceased, James Grehan, had been driving the vehicle which had collided with a post. The post was bent out of alignment. The injured man when questioned by an other man said that .he might have been driving fast, and after others had had a look at the vehicle he said the steering might have locked. From what he had seen there was no evi dence or inference that there was anyone else implicated in the matter. Witness had heard that Jamea Grehan had since died, and from what witness knew he would say that his death resulted from an accident, Constable W. S. T. Banks said that he had made enquiries from which he was satisfied that there were no circumstances of a suspicious nature. The deceased died in the General Hospital, Toowoomba, about 9.45 a.m. on December 28, 1938. Witness tendered a copy of the certificate showing the cause of death."

  • In 1919 Albert purchased land at Ravensbourne where he conducted a dairy farm. The Brisbane Courier reported in 1931 -" When the Government of the day surveyed the district with the idea of closer settlement in mind, the scheme was imitant of the old American principle of providing community protection against hostile tribes, unknown in the Ravensbourne district. Each 80-acre block holder was allotted an acre township site on which to reside and thus was set up a community, from which the settlers were expected to sally forth each day to work their holding, the women and children remaining behind. Mr A E Baileys fine dairy farm is the last remaining vestige of the scheme" and "The 80-acre dairy farm worked and owned by Mr. A. E. Bailey is a model living area. A comfortable home adjacent to the main road overlooks one of the most picturesque small farms to be found in the State. The growth of paspalum and clover has created a dense mat over the whole of the property. The Jersey herd, numbering slightly more than 20, are the progeny of the Patrick stud. Mr. Bailey was a war pilot, and 12 years ago took up farming on this high-producing area, where the salubrious climate has done much to mend broken health for him. His farm, like others in the district, returns a comfortable living to its owner."
