- Mary Stuart immigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on 15 November 1838. Departed from Orban, Scotland on 4 July 1838 on the St George with William and two daughters, Louisa McPherson and Janet McGregor. The immigration record showed Mary's calling as "servant of all work". She was the daugther of Donald Stewart a farmer of the Parish of Insch and his wife Janet. Mary's age on Embarkation was "30 years in August 1838" (which is incorrect). Her religion was Presbyterian and she could read and write. Mary's two younger brothers George and Donald were with them on the voyage. What a heart wrenching time this must have been for Mary who was forced to leave behind at least one of her children, Ewan McPherson, with her parents - see William's story for information on departure.
- In 1844,her daughter, Jess (Janet) McGregor died in New South Wales. Her death certificate shows her as Jesse Macgregor. Jess is pet name for Janet. The only other information given was that she was an infant. It seems likely that this is the correct Jesse as her mothers death certificate shows one daughter by second marriage deceased.
- On 24 April 1863,their son, Donald McGregor died in Nelsons Plains, New South Wales, Australia. When he was accidentally shot. He was a farm labourer and dairy man at the time of his death. According to family hearsay he returned from Duck Shooting with a party of lads. As he was getting out of the boat one boy, not knowing the gun was loaded, pretended to shoot Donald. Donald died from the wounds, he was 19 years old. An inquest was held by William Edward Shaw Coroner on the 25 April 1863, verdict accidental gunshot wound. The gun discharged while he was getting through a fence according to another family story.
- Mary Stuart died on 23 December 1877 in Holsworthy, New South Wales, Australia, at age 73. Her death was caused by "decay of nature, had been ailing some time - the coroner did not deem it necessary to hold an inquest.". She was shown as 74 years old. Her father was given as John Stewart, cattle dealer, mother unknown. The informant was George McGregor her son of Holsworthy. George gave Scotland as her place of birth and stated she had been in the Colony 30 years. Her first marriage was to a McPherson, the second to a McGregor. One son alive, two daughters dead by first marriage, two sons and two daughters alive by second, and one son and one daughter dead by second. Her death notice appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald on 3 January 1878. It read: "McGREGOR. —December 23, at her late residence, Holsworthy, Mary, the dearly regretted wife of William McGregor, in her 74th year, for many years a resident of Nelson's Plains, Hunter River"
Just what happened to William is a mystery. George was listed as the informant on his mother's death certificate. William is not listed as living or deceased but Mary's death notice indicates he may still have been alive. There is no death registration for him. One possibility is that he later remarried and lived in Maitland. However, where the age matches that of William the other details don't. The 1872 Grenville's Post Office Directory shows a William McGregor of Bringelly and a William McGregor of Maitland suggesting there were two. - Mary was buried on 24 December 1877 in Liverpool Cemetery, Sydney. Presbyterian Section.
