- In December 1938 George ran a store in Goodger near Kingaroy. The store almost perished in a bushfire as related by The Northern Miner :- " STORE MENACED.
Bushfire Near Kingaroy
KINGAROY, December 24
For more than three hours this afternoon George Tigell, storekeeper, and neighbouring farmers fought to save their homes from a bushfire at Goodger, nine miles from Kingaroy. They were reinforced by an emergency squad of volunteers, who responded to a dramatic call for help over the radio.
It is believed that the fire was started by sparks from the Tarong train on its run into Kingaroy.
Fanned by a strong wind the fire burned its way through to Goodger, and about 3-30 p.m., was only 10 chains from the store, which is in thickly timbered country.
Fending the efforts of himself and neighbours unavailing, Tigell had an urgent appeal for volunteers sent over the air. This brought men racing in cars from all over the district.
Sergeant J. V. Dowde and Constable K. Hefferan took a party out from Kingaroy, and with Tigell they organised fire-fighting parties.
Excessive heat militated against the efforts of the fire-fighters, whose task at one stage appeared hopeless.
A five-minute lull in the wind gave an opportunity for the completion of a firebreak, and the store was saved. Semi-exhausted fire fighters were just about to congratulate themselves when another urgent call sent them racing several miles to another corner, where the fire was menacing the home of a farmer, Lance Goodger. It was saved only after a desperate fight. A fire-break burned round the house earlier in the week saved the situation. - At the age of 30 years, George Martin Tigell married Eva Phyllis Eastick in 1940 in Queensland.
