He was aboard the "Homeric" when it docked at Ellis Island on the 18 June 1924, and on 9 July 1924 (as was a George Vowden.)
- On 27 August 1944 their son Gerald Bertram was drowned when his ship was sunk by friendly fire by the RAF. Jsoeph and Alice were living at Shirley, Southampton at the time.

Iris wa a widow. Witnesses to the marriage were Michael William Weight Vowden (Desmond's son) and Michael Wigram.
