Cornelius O'Connor

Cornelius O'Connor (1841-1922) & his wife Mary Wilson (1865-1936). Pioneers of the Emu Creek District
- Cornelius O'Connor was born in 1841 in Meelin, Newmarket, County York, Ireland. He was the son of Timothy O'Connor and Ellen O'Connor.
- He and Patrick Lenehan, his cousin, immigrated to Queensland in 1864. He would have been 23 years old. Con and Patrick were cousins and travelled on the ship Queen of the South.
They worked in the Ipswich area until 1875 when Con found work on Emu Creek Station as a stockman and fencer. Patrick remained at Rosewood.
When work was scarce at Emu Creek Station Con would join the shearing circuit, sometimes walking between properties when the feed was scarce for the horse. On his visits to Jondaryan Homestead Station he would always bring a packet of lollies for little Jimmy Fenton who still remembered this kindness when he was well into his ninties. - Cornelius O'Connor selected land on 21 February 1881 in Emu Creek. The land adjoined Emu Creek Station Homestead. He built a slab hut with a dirt floor and shingle roof.
- At the age of 46 years, Cornelius O'Connor married Mary Wilson on 9 February 1887 in St Patrick's Catholic Church, Toowoomba, Queensland. They lived in Con's slab hut. Two children, Mary and John, were born at Emu Creek before Con and Mary moved to "Mountain Camp", a property a few miles up Emu Creek. In May 1891, Peter McKilllop, the owner of Emu Creek Station exchanged his block, now known as "Mountain Camp", for the O'Connors block at Emu Creek. A hand written agreement was drawn up by Flower and Hart, solicitors, Brisbane. The document included legal details for the removal of the slab house to "Mountain Camp" in 1892. The land a Emu Creek was eventually settled by Orlando, then Egbert Maddern.
The O'Connor family lived in a slab barn while their house was being removed and re-erected. Both the house and the barn, built with morticed joints and wooden dowels were still standing in 1991. The shingle roofs had been replaced by corrigated iron.
- The family carried out dairying and cheese making. In the middle of the 1890's a travelling dairy came to the district to teach the art of cheese making. Mary attended soon was selling cheese to locals and also sent some to Brisbane. The children often carried a heavy cheeses with them on the walk to Djuan school, about four miles away. Mary was awarded First Prize for the Best Farmers Cheese at the Crow's Nest Show in 1904. The family continued to be competitors and exhibitors at the show for many years.
- Cornelius O'Connor and Mary Wilson had four more children ., Ellen, Cornelius, Bridget and Catherine, all born at "Mountain Camp". The family lived in the slab hut until a home was built in 1907.

- Mary O'Grady was born on 15 February 1871 in Humbug Creek, Morgangarrel, Forbes, New South Wales.
- She was the daughter of James O'Grady and Elizabeth Cotington.
- At the age of 19 years and 12 days, Mary O'Grady married William Peter Kelly on 27 February 1890 in Kallara Station, Tilpa, Darling River, New South Wales. Four children were born to them by 1896 - Mary at Goorimpa Station, Katherine at Kallara Station, Elizabeth and Rose Ann at Gooringa Station. Sometime after 1897, the family moved to Tiboola Station at Eulo in Queensland where Hilda was born. Their brother-in-law James Ryan and Mary's sister Rose Ann also lived on Tiboola Station.
- In 1902 the Kelly family were living in Thallon Street Crow's Nest. In July 1903 the family moved from Crow's Nest to Walter Benton's selection at Pinelands. William rebted the farm from Walter Benton, cancelling the arrangement in July 1904. In April 1904 the house burned down and a collection to help the family was started amongst the teamsters and farmers of the area.
While the family was waiting for a new house to be built they lived with Mary's sister Rose Ann and her husband James Ryan, and family in Benton's barn. The Ryan family had come to the area shortly before from western Queensland, possibly from Tibooburra Station. - Mary O'Grady witnessed the burial of Katherine Kelly on 18 April 1903 in Crow's Nest Cemetery; Alfred and James King witnessed her burial.
- On 17 October 1904 William and Mary enrolled their children, Mary, May, Rose and Hilda in the Pinelands State school. The girls left the school in Sep 1906. The family moved to Cooyar where they had purchased a block of land.
- On 1 November 1920,her husband, William Peter Kelly died in Toowoomba General Hospital, Queensland. He had been working his bullock team the afternoon before when his whip became tangled in a wheel and he was run over by the wagon injuring his foot and the lower part of his body. He taken to Toowoomba by ambulance but died in hospital. After William's death Mary ran a boarding house and small shop at 3 McDowall St, Cooyar until she sold her home to her son in law Ernest Hurley. She continued to live with her immediate family of married daughters until her death.
- Mary O'Grady appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1949 living at Upper Cooyar. She carried out home duties.
- Mary O'Grady died on 14 August 1966 in Queensland at age 95.
- Mary was buried on 15 August 1966 in Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery.
