Thomas is shown as a 25 year old gardener living with his wife Prisilla 30, and daughters Catherine 3 and Maryann 2. All were born in Cornwall. The surname was spelt MADRON.

• On 1 July 1854,Mary Ann Maddern's mother, Priscilla Lower died in Newlyn, Cornwall, at age 47. Of her children Catherine, the oldest was 17 and John, the baby of the family only 6. No doubt the older girls had a great influence both John and 8 year old Thomas junior in their early years.

Thomas sen, the household head, was a 44 year old widower, agent to export ?brocolia (illegible), born Newlyn, St Paul and living with his unmarried daughters Catherine 23, housekeeper; Mary Ann 21, assistant housekeeper; Grace 19, assistant housework; Priscilla 17, dressmaker; Thomas, son, 15 scholar; John, son, 13 scholar. The surname was spelt MADDRON.
  
  
• At the age of 22 years, 2 months and 19 days, Mary Ann Maddern married Charles Barnes, son of Benjamin Prowse Barnes and Jane Badcock, on 1 January 1862 in Paul, Newlyn, Cornwall, England. The marriage record shows they were married by banns. Charles Varbes (incorrect spelling), 22 was a gardener of Stable Hobba (Father: Benjamin Barnes, Gardener). Mary Ann Maddern 22 was of Newlyn (Father: Thomas Maddern, Agent). Witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Maddern, Catherine Maddern.
  
• Mary Ann Maddern and Charles Barnes immigrated to Moreton Bay, Queensland, on 7 April 1862. The ship "Mortmorrency" had departed Plymouth, Devon on 4th January 1862.
  
• Charles, Priscilla and Walter appear to be the only children of Charles and Mary Ann whose births are registered.
  
• Mary Ann Maddern died on 2 October 1882 in Rosella Farm, Gowrie Creek, Queensland, at age 42. Mary Ann died from typhoid fever just three and a half weeks after her nineth child Ida May was born.
  
• Mary was buried on 3 October 1882 in Toowoomba & Drayton Cemetery. Church of England Section 19-27:C8. Her headstone, and that of her sister Catherine were said to be erected by their brother John. The headstone reads -A busy wife - a mother dear A faithful friend lies buried here Our loss is great - while we say Amen In heaven we hope to meet again
  A memorial to the sisters has also been added to the headstone of their parents, Thomas and Priscilla Maddern in the Paul Churchyard, Penzance.

Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern (1884-1970), son of John Maddern and Mary Ann Cossart.

• Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern was born on 7 January 1884 in Kedron Brook, Crows Nest, Queensland. At the time of Orlando's birth, John Maddern was living at Crow's Nest. Orlando's grandmother Mary Cossart was nurse at the birth.
  
• He was the son of John Maddern and Mary Ann Cossart.
• He was engaged in the timber industry at Emu Creek and later at Stanthorpe. Later he became a grazier in the Stanthorpe District and was still there in 1947.
  
  
• This photo of the Emu Creek (Mossview) Cricket Team was taken around 1910. Thomas and Amanda Broadfoot sponsored the team and it is thought that they are the couple in the middle front of the photo. Their son James is sitting on his father's knee.
  
• In 1911 when Egbert and Alice Gillies were married the family may have taken the opportunity to have some photos taken on the verandah of "Jubilee Vale."

• Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern was elected secretary of the Mossview Cricket Club in September 1911. The Brisbane Courier reported on 17 Sep 1911 - The following officers have been elected in connection with the Mossview Cricket Club (Emu Creek) President Mr. H Gillies vice-president. Mr J Patch secretary, Mr O Maddern selection committee. Messrs H. Gillies, Maddern and J. Patch. A successful dance in aid of the club was held last Friday night Mr H. Gillies had charge of the dancing and the music was supplied by Messrs Maddern Brothers, J Patch and E Luxford.
  
• At the age of 28 years, 8 months and 4 days, Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern married Emily Dora Bidgood, daughter of William Gregory Bidgood and Anna Barbara Salome (Emily) Anger, on 11 September 1912 in Emu Creek.

• In 1913 Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern was paying rates to the Crow's Nest Shire Council for 420 acres of land in the Parish of Djuan.
  
• On 3 February 1914 Orlando was nominated as Secretary for the Jubilee Vale State School Committee, along with John Maddern (chairman),Egbert Maddern, William Gregory Bidgood (Treasurer) John McRae, Thomas Patch, and Albert James Bidgood.
• On 15 June 1917, Orlando wrote a letter to the Undersecretary with regard to heating the Jubilee Vale School " I have been instructed to inquire if your department will provide a small heating stove for the above school. The children complain of it being too cold in school. The school is very much exposed to westerly winds and the district is rather open and cold."
• On 20 September 1919, Orlando wrote again to the Undersecretary, Department of Instruction requesting permission for the erection of a tennis court at the Jubilee Vale School. " I have the honour to make application for permission to erect a Tennis Court on the above School ground. The bond organizing consists of members of Committee, parents, ex School Children, and others in the immediate neighbourhood. Would you be kind enough to reply as soon as possible.”? The undersecretary recommended to inform him that his request was under consideration and that the head teacher was to be informed of the request and to enquire whether in her opinion there was any objection.
• He and Emily Dora Bidgood appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1925 living at Glenmore, Emu Creek, Crow's Nest. Orlando was a teamster and Emily carried out home duties.
  
• This article appeared in the The Courier Mail on 5 January 1925. It read: "The following were the guests of Mr. J. Maddern, Penleigh, Crow's Nest, last week :-Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Maddern, Emu Creek, Mr. and Mrs. F. Trost and family, Jandowae, and Mrs. W. J. Bidgood and family, Miles."
  
• Around 1926 Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern and Laurence Michael Diamond went into partnership in the timber industry in Stanthorpe where Orlando managed the Diamond sawmill.
  
• Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern and Emily Dora Bidgood appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1930 and 1954 living at Wangaratta Road, Stanthorpe. Orlando was a sawmiller and Emily carried out home duties.
  
• On 28 October 1933, his applied for probate of the will of John Maddern. The following advertisement appeared in the "Courier Mail" - "'IN THE SUPREME COURT OF QUEENSLAND, in the WILL and two CODICILS of JOHN MADDERN late of Crow's Nest In the State of Queensland Retired Farmer and Grazier deceased. Notice is hereby given that after the expiration of fourteen days from the date of the publication hereof application will be made to this Honourable Court that PROBATE of the WILL, and two Codicils of the above named John Maddern deceased may be granted to ORLANDO PENZANCE COSSART MADDERN of Stanthorpe In the State of Queensland Timber Merchant EGBERT THOMAS SPENCER MADDERN of Emu Creek near Crows Nest In the said State Farmer and JOHN VICTOR DAVID MADDERN of Crows Nest aforesaid Farmer lawful Sons of the said deceased and the Executors named In the said Will and Codicils. Any person interested who desires to object to the application or to be heard upon It may file a Caveat in the Registry at any time before the Grant Is made. Dated this Twenty-fourth day of October 1933. GROOM and LAVERS. Solicitors for the said Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern Egbert Thomas Spencer Maddern and John Victor David Maddern Margaret Street. Toowoomba."
  
• On 1 March 1934 the following article appeared in the "Brisbane Courier":- TOOWOOMBA CIRCUIT COURT.
  Herman Rose was charged that between November 6 and 11, 1933, at Toowoomba, he stole a quantity of dressed pine timber the property of Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern, and others, and further that he received such timber, knowing it to have been stolen. Accused pleaded not guilty. The case was not finished when the Court adjourned to tomorrow.
  
• The following article appeared in the It concerned the theft of timber from Orlando and his partners and read:- "VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY -Judge Agrees With Jurors
  TOOWOOMBA, March 1.
  When the Jury returned at 8 o'clock to-night in the Circuit Court with a verdict of not guilty on two counts against Herman Rose, who was charged with stealing and receiving a quantity of timber, Mr. Justice Henchman told the jurors that he entirely agreed with the verdict. "It was mostly a case of suspicion," his Honour added.
  The Crown Prosecutor (Mr. C. J. Cosgrove) thereupon presented a further Indictment against Rose, charging him with stealing and receiving timber from a consignment from Gatton, between November 8 and 11. 1933. Accused was remanded for trial to the next sittings of the Circuit Court in Toowoomba, on April 30. Bail was allowed.
  Rose's trial at the current sittings commenced on Wednesday. He was charged that between November 6 and 11, 1933, at Toowoomba, he stole a quantity of dressed pine timber, the property of Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern, and others, and further that between the dates mentioned, at Toowoomba, he received timber, the property of Maddern and others, which had then lately been stolen, knowing it to have been so stolen. Mr. R. E. O'Connor appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty"
  on 2 March 1934.
• Orlando Penzance Cossart Maddern was Grazier, Wilson's Downfall.
  
• In September 1954, a photograph of all of the Maddern children appeared in the local paper. The article under the photo read:- "The Maddern family, "three boys and three girls", with their wives and husbands, held a reunion dinner in Queen's Park kiosk on Saturday on the occasion of Mr and Mrs O Maddern's forty-second wedding anniversary. The "boys" and "girls" are the children of the late John Maddern, Cornish-born farmer who died in 1933 and who took up land in the Crow's Nest District 74 years ago. Front (left to right) Mrs G J Whittaker, Mr Whittaker, Mrs E Maddern, Mr E Maddern, Mrs F Trost and Mr Trost. Back (left to right) Mrs J Maddern, Mr J Maddern, Mrs J W Bidgood, Mr Bidgood, Mr O Maddern, and Mrs O Maddern."
