  • She was the daughter of James Kingston and Rose Ann Clark.
  • About 1876 her name was changed to Annie Rose Kingston when she was adopted by James and Rose Anne Kingston who had no children of their own. A second girl, Edith was adoped a few years later.
  • Annie Downes immigrated circa 1880 to Queensland with James Kingston and Rose Ann Clark. James Kingston came with his wife Rose and adopted daughter Annie. They are said to have emigrated in 1880 possibly on the "Scottish Hero" or "Scottish Prince". Or they may have come in 1879 on the "Scottish Lass."
  • Annie Downes and an unknown person were enrolled at the South Bundaberg School on 30 November 1880 Annie's (enrolled as a Kingston) age at the time was given as 7 years and 2 months, (correct age would have been 9 years). Mary (Polly) Kingston was enrolled at the same time.
  • She attended school in North Bundaberg School on 26 February 1884 Her age was given as 12 years and 4 months and her father was listed as a baker.
  • Her daughter was born 26 September 1889 in Abington, Childers. The child was still born about 7pm. As was usual at that time an inquest was held into the death. It was conducted by W.N. Keyes JP on 27 Aug/5 Sep 1889 Ref Jus/N169378/1889.
    Annie stated that the father was Charles Barbeler, a baker from Maryborough. Annie had gone to Maryborough on 9 November 1888 to work for Charles Barbeler and returned to Abington on 9 January 1889. She stated at the Inquest into the child's death that Charles Barbeler had sex with her on Christmas night 1888 and five times after that. She also stated that her adopted father, James Kingston also had sex with her on several occasions but only once after she came home from Maryborough, that being about two months after her return.
  • Annie Downes died on 15 April 1892 in Maryborough Hospital, Maryborough, at age 20. Annie was living with Mrs Larson at Horton when her clothes caught fire while attending domestic duties. She sustained severe burns to her lower body on Thursday 14 April 1892. She was taken to hospital at Maryborough where she died the next day. Her death details list no mother or fathers' names. Her death is registered as DOUEN perhaps a misspelling of DOWNES by the Registry.
  • Annie was buried on 16 April 1892 in Maryborough Cemetery.

  • Charles Downes and Louisa Martha Jefferis immigrated to Albany, Western Australia, in 1888. They arrived on the 16 June 1888 on the "Austral" with their son Joscelyn.
  • According to family hearsay, Charles found it difficult to find work in Western Australia, and the family moved several times during the next few years.
  • Charles Downes died on 7 March 1896 in Mackie Street, Perth, Western Australia, at age 44. The family believe Charles suffered from turbuclosis and that was the reason the family came to Australia, in the hope that his health would improve. After his death, according to family hearsay, he was buried "under a tree in East Perth" outside the East Perth cemetery, which lead to speculation that his death may have been suicide. To date no official record of his death has been found. However, a Death Notice appeared in the Western Australia newspaper. It read-
