Fortunately three month old Emma was not treated. The Singleton Argus and Upper Hunter Advocate reported "A Mother and three Children Poisoned in Mackay.
The Herald's Brisbane correspondent sends the following brief particulars an appalling occurrence at Mackay:-" An occurrence the other day at Mackay was attended with fearful consequences, and presents features of extraordinary folly on the part of some of the principal actors. It appears that about a year ago a German, who was then living in a hut with three other men, found in the thatch of the roof a small bottle containing some white crystalline substance, which he showed to his mates as a discovery of Epsom salts, and stated his intention of keeping it till he went home, when it would serve for family use. It is marvellous that it never occurred to and of the four men that it might be anything else, although they had no earthly means of telling who had put the stuff in its hiding place; nor does the fact of its having been so planted appear to have raised a suspicion in their minds. The wife also seems to have taken, for granted that the bottle contained Epsom salts, and put it wary for future use. It was fearfully unfortunate that the idea should have occurred to the poor creature to dose herself and her three children all at once—but so it was; and in half-an hour from the administration of the presumed medicine the unfortunate man was alone in the world. Medical aid was at hand, and every effort was made to move life, but the dose, which had been administered with the free hand with which Epsom. Salts are used, had been such as to render remedies powerless before the rapid action of the terrible poison."
