Josiah is shown as 29 years old, born Monacute, father dead, mother living in Merriott. Mary is 27 years old, native place Merriott, parents Samuel and Betsy living in Merriott. Unable to read or write.
  • On 21 December 1858,his wife, Mary Denmead died in New South Wales at age 32. She died of heart disease.
  • Josiah had previously been charged with physical assault of Mary and after a death an inquiry and autopsy were held. No evidence was found against Josiah. According to family heresay, Josiah was not a very nice person.
  • After her mother's death, Elizabeth was given into the care of a neighbour by Josiah who then disappeared from all records. Family stories have him ship wrecked on his way back to England.
