  • In August 1910 Ferdinand was struck by a train. A report of the incident appeared in "The Courier Mail" on the 31 August. It read:-Age's Immunity. There are two fortunate old persons in Queensland, for they have just come through railway accidents without much injury. A report received by the Commissioner from the Traffic Manager at Toowoomba states that an old man was seen walking along the railway line at 105 railed, and the driver of an approaching train sounded the whistle and applied the brakes. The man was apparently lightly struck by the engine and knocked down. The Government Medical Officer examined him on his arrival at Toowoomba, and found he was unhurt except for a few skin abrasions His name was Ferdinand Abell and he was said to be 82 years of age. In the second instance, Mrs Wilson was boarding the train at Albion as it was moving off, and was dragged along the platform for about 10 yards before, the tram was stopped. She was unhurt. Mrs Wilson is nearly 8O years of age , she expressed regret for her action in attempting to board a moving train, and said that "nothing of the kind would happen again."

  • Robert Albert Abel died on 7 August 1979 in Queensland at age 53. He had been hit by a car while crossing the road. The Toowoomba Chronicle reported on 7 Aug 1979 "A pedestrian was in a serious condition last night after being struck by a car. Ronald Abel, 53, of Lindsay Street, Toowoomba received injuries to the head, shoulder and pelvis, multiple fractures to the legs and multiple abrasions to the hands in the accident. Abel was struck by a car as he was crossing Margaret Street, in front of the TraveLodge Motel at 6.38 p.m". The next day his death was reported "A pedestrian struck by a car on Monday night died early yesterday morning in the Toowoomba General Hospital. Ronald Abel, 53 of Lindsay Street, was admitted to the Toowoomba General in a serious condition after the accident at 6.38 p.m. He was struck by a car as he was crossing the road near the TraveLodge Motel. Mr Abel died about Midnight from head injuries, multiple fractions and abrasions."
  • He was buried on 8 August 1979 in Toowoomba & Drayton Cemetery.
