The Death of Mr David Johnstone
The residents of Tenterfield will regret to hear of the passing of Mr David Johnstone of "Ellenthorpe", Tenterfield after a lengthy illness. The late Mr Johnstone who reached the ripe age of 91 years, was highly esteemed for his straight forward dealing and integrity of purpose. He was the son of the soil and a man of keen judgement relative to land and stock. He was very successful in spite of many setbacks incidental to his calling and ill health.
He was born in October 1845, his birthplace being County Fermanaugh Ireland. He sailed to Australia with his parents when 11 years of age, when a home was made at Jamberoo, South Coast. Later they went to Robinson and thence to Gerringong in 1872 and followed up dairying pursuits. In 1875 he married his partner in life Miss Margaret Jane Black of Gerringong who predeceased him in May 1932. Ten years after marriage in 1885 accompanied by his wife and family he went to Richmond River but owing to the coast being bar bound on the way to Ballina a landing was made at Harwood Island. The journey was continued by coach to Newrybar which at the time was surrounded by dense scrub. A home was made in that centre where they resided for 15 years. He was one of the first Directors of the Brooket Butter Factory. In 1900 in account of ill health, Mr Johnstone was compelled to seek fresh fields and came to Tenterfield where he has resided up to the time of his death having enjoyed a pleasure of good health.
There were nine children seven of whom survive. They are Miss Maude Johnstone (Tenterfield), Mrs G F Staines (Kingaroy, Q), Thomas Johnstone (Knockrow), George Johnstone (Tabulum), Ralph Johnstone (Kempsey), D C Johnstone (Monto, Q), and James Victor Johnstone (Tenterfield).
