- His marriage, at 21 years and 9 months, to Alice May Pratt was registered in the March 1917 Quarter Registration District. (Alice may have gone by the name of Alice May Jones.)
- In 1924 Joseph was employed as an AB seaman on the "Araguaya" which sailed from Southhampton and arrived in New York on 19 May 1924. According to Ellis Isleland records he was 29 years old 5'8" and weighed 158lbs. He had a TigerHead and Tombolone ? (perhaps tattoes). He was aboard the "Homeric" when it docked at Ellis Island on the 18 June 1924, and on 9 July 1924 (as was a George Vowden.)
- On 27 August 1944 their son Gerald Bertram was drowned when his ship was sunk by friendly fire by the RAF. Jsoeph and Alice were living at Shirley, Southampton at the time.
