  • William Leslie Pye was born in November 1879 in New Zealand. He was the son of Oliver Pye and Jane.
  • He began military service on 4 January 1916 in Toowoomba. William enlisted in the 8/31 and gave his next of kin as his mother Jane Gardiner of Melbourne. He was a labourer born in New Zealand.
  • The following article appeared in the The Brisbane Courier in February 1916. "A social and dance were tendered to W. L. Pye, a resident of Pinelands district, at Pinelands last night, he having enlisted. There was a large attendance. Mr. Ray White presented tho guest with a silver wallet on behalf of the Patriot Committee and residents of the district, Mr. M. Travers presented him with a handsome case of silver-mounted pipes from the residents of Pinelands. Mr.Pye suitably replied."
  • William Leslie Pye was killed in action on 2 November 1917 in France.
  • He memorial is located on the Menin Gate, Ypres.
