The following article appeared in the Darling Downs Gazette on 3 October 1908:- "The death of May Mitchell, aged 14 took place this afternoon. It appears that the deceased, who was not feeling well, was brought into town yesterday, and seemed fairly well until toward evening when she grew delirious and was nearly continuously so up to the end. Dr Overend was in attendance, but the case was beyond relief and death was due to brain fever and heart failure Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell are amongst the oldest residents of this district and much sympathy is expressed for them in their bereavement”.

  • Mary Ann (Molly) Gleeson's family was involved in an accident that caused the death of Frances (Maud) Mitchell on 24 April 1933 at Meandu Creek Bridge, Nanango, Queensland. A report of the accident was published in The Brisbane Courier on her death was published on the 13 Apr 1933 - " A serious motor accident occurred on the Nanango-Kingaroy road about 10.30 a.m. to-day. Mr. F. A. Mitchell, licensee of the Grand Hotel, Goomeri, accompanied by his wife and three daughters, Misses Maude Francis, Blanche Ellen, and Marie Mitchell, were proceeding to Toowoomba to attend the wedding of Miss Blanche Mitchell, one of the occupants of the car, which had been arranged to take place in Toowoomba on Monday next. When rounding a curve approaching the Meandu Creek Bridge, about two miles from Nanango, the car appeared to continue straight on, and dashed
    over the side of the bridge, falling into a dry creek 15ft. below. A passing motorist dragged the occupants from the wreckage, and communicated with the Nanango police. Dr. P. G. M'Reddie was early on the scene, and the five injured persons were conveyed by the Kingaroy Ambulance to the Nanango Hospital. Mrs. Mitchell sustained a broken thigh, and all are suffering from severe shock and other injuries. The car was badly smashed.".
    Then on 26 April the following appeard. "The death occurred at the Nanango Hospital on Monday last of Miss Maude Mitchell, following a motor accident on the Kingaroy Road, in which her mother and sister were also seriously injured. The late Miss Mitchell was a native of Crow's Nest, but for the past four years had resided with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Mitchell, of the Grand Hotel, Goomeri. Deceased was a popular member of the younger set, and she will be mourned by a large circle of friends in the Darling Downs and Goomeri districts. A sad feature of her death was that the accident occurred when the family was motoring to Toowoomba to attend the wedding of Miss Blanche Mitchell to Mr. Ray Norton (sic) of Allora. "

    Eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Gleeson, who were pioneers of the Crow's Nest district, she was known for her kindness and her hospitality. Besides her husband, she is survived by four sons — Messrs. Frank (Brisbane), Gus (New Guinea) Michael, (Crows Nest), and John Mitchell (Toowoomba — and three daughters — Miss Madeline Mitchell (Toowoomba), and Mesdames R Naughton (Warwick) and G. Leadbetter (Brisbane.)"

Her siblings James 10, Michael 8, Jane 6 and Matthew 4 aslo commenced at the new school. The teacher was William Jenkinson who was untrained and had to cope with an under-equipped school. There were no blackboards, slates, books etc. He left a few months later and was replaced by David Moylan.
  • In September 1892, Ellen Gould gave notice that she intended to transfer the license of the Royal Hotel to Matthew Gleeson who had held the license for the "Crows Nest Hotel" for five years.
