In the Magisterial Inquiry Court yesterday, Mr. T. Nevitt, J.P., held an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding a fire, which occurred at Freeney-street, Rocklea, on September 20, and which destroyed a three roomed wooden dwelling, and some furniture, the property of Alexander Arthur Gorring.
Alexander Arthur Gorring, garage proprietor, Desmond lane, said he would value the house that was destroyed at £80. It was insured for £100. As to the cause of the fire the only thing witness could think that some camper got into the house. Every time witness went out to the house, which was unoccupied, he saw campers about the place. Witness would not say that his financial position was bad; he was just "battling"' along at the time of the fire. The insurance had not been paid. Witness thought it strange an unoccupied house catching fire, but had no idea as to the cause of the fire.
Constable W. H. Flori said he had been unable to ascertain how the fire originated, but in his opinion the place was wilfully burnt down by someone. The place in question was not a camping ground. From witness's inquiries Gorring was in very bad financial circumstances, and would be the only person to gain out of the fire should he be paid the full insurance on the building."
